Will DVI-I work in a DVI-D port?
the Cable is DVI-D Dual link on both ends, the monitor has DVI-I but the computer had DVI-D and the monitor shows the windows XP loading then shuts off saying no signal

You are getting no signal because the monitor cannot handle the resolution you set Windows to run at.
If possible, re-connect the last monitor you had that was working, boot into Windows, and set the resolution as low as possible (800x600 or 640x480, whichever is available), then shut-down Windows. Then connect your new monitor and it should be able to boot into Windows.
