Older Kenmore Top Loading Washer Won't Start?

Last weekend, my daughter attempted to do her laundry. She broke the knob off the control panel when she pulled it out to start filling the washer up. She said there was no other issue and she had done a load prior. However, after gluing it back on, you can neither pull it out (to fill the washer) or push it back in (as if to stop it) This is NOT caused by the glue. It is able to turn around to the different timed cycles but will not open or close to start the machine. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated (single mom with 5 kids!)

It sounds like somebody turned the timer in the wrong direction. They will hang up, particularly on the older Kenmores and Maytags. A new timer will run about $60.00 (US) at any appliance parts store. They will need the model number of your unit.

Before you go get crazy, and shell out for a new timer, (they run from 80 to 140), make sure its bad. 1st remove the knob, it should unscrew, but if the glue got in there you'll have to break it off. Once you have the knob removed, use a pair of pliers to see if it will push in or pull out. If it works again after the knob has been removed, you can buy a replacement knob for about 15 bucks. Just under the knob is another piece of plastic(Dial and knob guard), that just rotates, the knob floats in that piece. If you glued the knob to it, that's your problem.

You might as well, even if you buy a new timer, the knob and guard won't come with it.
