What makes Ed Reed better than Troy Polamalu?

Polamalu- 73 tackles, 7 interceptions, (should have 1 TD called back on a call that was later deemed incorrect against the Chargers)

Reed- 41 tackles, 9 interceptions, 2 TD

I dont get this. Polamalu's team beat Reed's team twice (reguardless of the last call in the 2nd game, Reed's defense gave up a 92 yard drive at crunch time). Polamalu is the best defensive player on the best defensive team (statistically) in the history of the NFL regular season. Polamalu has to defend the run (as seen by the 32 more tackles) while Reed gets far more interception opportunities (and still only has 2 more picks and one more TD). Polamalu has a Super Bowl ring, Reed does not. Please explain this to me?

Update:

laura- what do you mean 2 points?

Update 2:

joe821- yeah i dont get that. where is that translating? When the two play the Steelers defense has come up bigger. Also, the Steelers defense is more reliant on Polamalu because he has to play the run as well as the pass.

Update 3:

vikings for life- right but Polamalu has always had to play the run which Reed has never had to do. Also, Polamalu has a ring

Update 4:

JK Brown 24- Good points but Im not talking physically. I mean physically the QB with the most tools in the league is probably JaMarcus Russell, but hes not the best QB.

Showers daily. Did not go to college in a Geico commercial.

Seriously though, I go with durability. I think Polamalu is better but his concussion's are a serious concern and if I had to choose one for my team, I'd take Reed. Can't go wrong with either though.

As a Bengals fan I have seen too much of both of these guys over the past few years. I should be the authority on which is a better defender.

    It isn't even close.

    It's Reed.

He stays within his responsibilities and knows his role within his defensive scheme. Polamalu takes too many chances and gets lucky way more than perceived. Watch a game and see how many times reed misses a tackle and how many are missed by Polamalu. Plus Reed rarely overruns plays. Polamalu plays catch-up a lot on runs right at him.

PS -- Farrior and Harrison are BOTH better overall defenders than Polamalu.

Reed a harder hitter than Troy? Are you serious? Troy is all over the field and is more active in the Steelers defense that Reed is in the Ravens defense. Troy is ask to more things then Reed. He covers the tight ends, supports the run better (freqently for loses). He also cover down the field on wide receivers. He is a more rounded defender than Reed.

there pretty close id have to say that its the fact that it seems like in almost every play u see ed reed hes a ball hog he has 1 forced fumble 2 fumble recoveries and 1 fumble taken back for a td where polamalu does not have any.

also all of reed's interceptions and fumbles have happened when his team was losing

Nothing. I think its a toss up actually when it comes to these 2, Reed is a much harder hitter and may have the edge athletically, but Polamalu is more versatile on defense, and his play recognition skills are just insane.

Ed Reed more athletic and a natural DB

Reed pumps up his defense, If the team is playing bad he still goes all out. He is always in the middle of a big defensive play. He is consistent and he is not full of himself. He plays his game, plays to win and he is amazing!
