Am I likely to catch Toxoplasmosis?
I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant and my husband and I are looking to adopt a cat, but I know with that there's a big fear of toxoplasmosis. However, I grew up with cats that were indoor/outdoor cats. We sometimes had three at a time, and I often had to change the litterbox. Also, there were alot of wild cats in my neighborhood that our cats were around. So with all of that, isn't it likely that I'm already immune?

You can get tested for immunity. Otherwise, don't count on it! Have someone else change the litter and don't let the cat put its paws in your mouth. Don't put your hands near your mouth after touching the cat. You should be fine. :)

I have lived with my cats my entire life and have had two in the house for the past ten years. I'm currently 5 months pregnant. My husband cleans out the cat box and I don't handle them much right now. If I do, I wash my hands thoroughly afterward.
Toxoplasmosis is usually caught by cats from rodents, but there is still a risk (albeit, very rare) of getting something from being clawed by them, even accidentally. If you're going to adopt a cat (which is commendable!), you might want to wait until after you have the baby, or at least make sure your husband does all the work.
It will be difficult to bond with a kitty that may or may not make you sick. Since I have had both my cats for a decade and they don't go outside, I know they're okay. But adopting any animal, unfortunately, you can never been too sure where they've been and what they might have.
Whether or not you have an immunity to toxoplasmosis, however, isn't the issue. Only about 15% of women really are. But it is the fetus, which would probably not be able to live through it if you did catch it.

Toxo must be caught from exterior, so if yours is thoroughly indoors there is 0 danger of the kitten having it. The CDC web page online states that the time-honored transmission of toxo to human beings is exposure by using coping with uncooked meat, no longer by using cats. Vet sites say that a cat can basically pass the toxo for the period of the two weeks as quickly as they have been uncovered, and that is not on the cat, that is interior the poop. in case you wash your palms after cleansing the container you get rid of all danger of catching it, in the experience that your cat is a service. After that 2 weeks the cat can no longer pass it anymore and is immune. If yours has been indoors until at last now, there is 0 danger that the kitten has toxo. You your self are in all danger already immune in case you have been uncovered to toxo interior the previous. an elementary blood try on the medical doctors can determine this for you. while you're already immune, it particularly isn't a controversy for you in any respect. in case you haven't any longer been uncovered, you do no longer ought to do lots definitely. At this element there is no reason to be apprehensive of the kitten as a service, he's not in threat of ever having been uncovered. in case you have any qualms, basically use rubber gloves or wash your palms after the container cleansing. do no longer ostracize the cat for some thing that is not even sporting.

I got rid of our cat when I found out I was pregnant (not rid, but my mom took her for a while), just to be on the safe size. Def. do not change a litter box!!!
Along the same lines I have a spin off questions...my mother in law just revealed to me that she has toxoplasmosis. This isn't contagious is it???

You could be immune already, but if you get a cat, just have your hubby scoop the litter box. We have two cats and their litter box used to be next to the washer/dryer (before we moved) and I'm 21 weeks pregnant and I don't have the toxoplasmosis.

If you are planning on adopting a cat it's safer to keep it indoors as it isn't as likely to be a carrier that way. Also, have your hubby/partner change the litter. We have 2 inside cats and I just stay away from the litter box. You can't be immune to it.

It IS likely you are immune to it. You can easily gain immunity from one exposure, and a lot of wild or outdoor cats are carriers without symptoms. Regardless, if you do get a kitty (yay!) just have your hubby change the litter for you anyway!!

You'll be fine. You most definitely won't be the first pregnant woman around a cat or cat-box.

Most likely you've already had it. But just to be safe, have your husband take care of cleaning the litter box while you are pregnant.
