Does the TV Show "House" correctly portray typical doctor Behavior?

I have watched several episodes of the TV show "House" and I was just wondering if the show correctly portrays how a team of doctors actually behave? While the show can be very entertaining at times, it is also rather disturbing. It portrays very unethical behavior at times and suggests that the doctors really don't care much about the patients well being. Some of the doctors are also shown being self righteous and not really working together as a team but rather in cut throat competition with one another. Many of the doctors are very rude, even to the patients, and some of their actions are shocking.

Now, I realize it's only a TV show. However, when a program such as "House" is attempting to portray a professional occupation, such as a doctor or lawyer, shouldn't they at least attempt to make a better representation of the realty of the occupation? Heck, if Doctors actually behave in that manner, I'll think twice before going to the hospital or doctor's office next time. I would love to hear how other doctors and health care providers feel about this show and its portrayal of their occupation.

I think they portray human behaviour well because even though people go into the house knowing it is on television and watched 24/7 you cant keep up a false personality 24/7 for weeks. Their human nature will come out eventual in body language actions ETC They automatic pick a leader and also group formations they also go into the role they want to play in the house hunter nurturer ETC I think the first few where the best of BB as they did not know what to expect but on the whole after a few weeks true human behaviour does come through

It is a TV show made in Hollywood. It is exaggerated to be interesting to attract viewers. Thus, it is not typical of doctors' behavior just like some of the lawyers in Boston Legal are not typical of all lawyers. It is entertainment! If you let a Hollywood portrayal affect your perception of the medical (or any other) profession then you likely watch too much TV.

  • Not quite. Some doctors are really caring. Most just jerks. But House is not like any doctor i have ever had. But most doctors are jerks. House acts like he doesn't care but by the end of the show he saves everyone's life. So it's just a show he puts on.

Any doctor who acted in that manner would be fired, sued or shot. You cannot deal with people in that awful manner when they are going through a health crisis and expect not to get canned. He is so pompous, rude and sarcastic. I wish they would inject some compassion into his soul, otherwise he is just Oscar the Grouch.

Attitude wise maybe yes. On a team of doctors there is usually always an ***, a compassionate one, and one in between.

Ethnically most of the things House does would lead to his license being revolted and probably jail time.

No, it doesn't portray typical doctor behavior. I watched this one program where this guy went to search for a real life dr. house, and he came to the conclusion that there isn't one. The reason is because House's techniques aren't...allowed? I mean, he'll torture someone to figure out what's wrong.

    Yeah...House isn't typical. haha

:) I love the show though!

    No it doesn't.

Those shows wouldn't be very entertaining if they actually portrayed what a typical doctor or lawyer's day is like.

No. It's extremely exaggerated fiction. Doctors working a real case are a lot more boring and factual, and very rarely does everyone eventually sleep with everyone else.
