Is my Mystery Snail dead?

I was cleaning my fish tank and after I was done, I put my snail back. He moved for a while and then never moved again. Ever since, he has been in the same spot and I haven't seen him move. It is now 2 days later and he has a white fluffy fuzz coming out of him. I don't know whether or not he is dead. I've had him for 3 months and he's sat in one place for a day, but nothing like this. I don't want to get rid of him unless I am for sure he is dead. What is the white stuff? Help!

Pull the snail out of the tank and give him a *whiff*.... A dead snail smells terrible. Like raw sewage. Give his trap door a little pull...if he reacts... he's alive, if he doesn't.. he's dead.

Also, The shell will loose color as the insides deteriorate.

That fuzz could be the snail rotting or rotting food that is caught in it's trap door. If you determine that it is still alive, clean the fuzz off of it before returning him to the tank..

    Good Luck!

I had a mystery snail that stayed in the same place for over a week and I was about to dispose of him. Then I looked on the internet and it said it is common that they will sit for days or even weeks. The thing I found to do is take the snail out of the water and smell it. If there is a really foul smell than chances are he is dead. Mine did not smell so I just put him back in the aquarium and after a couple more days he was moving like nothing had ever happened. However, I have never heard of the white fuzz on a snail so I don't really know what that could mean. He might be sick which could cause him to stay in the same place. I suggest looking on the internet. Hope this helps.

He is more than likely deceased. The white stuff could be him rotting and his insides is coming out. While it is normal for snails to stay in their shell for days on end...it is not normal for white stuff to come out of them. If you have other species in the tank you are risking killing them by leaving a decaying snail in the tank while it is letting off toxic matter into the tank. I would suggest a water change after you remove the snail if he is dead.

try to pull him out of his shell. if he tries to go back in, its alive. if it comes out it is dead. white fuzz could mean a dead, rotting snail, and you need to get it out of your tank asap
