Do you think Israel's response is 'disproportionate'?

what would a proportionate response look like?

http://www.jewishworldreview.com/jonatha...

And I also wonder when we decided that acts of war must be proportionate in response. If we'd followed that idea during WWII, we'd be speaking German. If Mexico launched missiles into Texas and killed 9 civilians, would you advocate that we kill 9 of their civilians, and then just hope they didn't escalate? Or would we go after them with force to make sure it didn't happen again? And what if they'd been killing Americans for 2 or 3 years?

Sane answers would be nice.

Update:

Tao, that's actually a very Jewish thought. Question: Is it also murder to allow an enemy to kill your people?

Update 2:

Joe, I like you.

Update 3:

Funguy: Israel has NEVER targeted civilians.

Hamas has ALWAYS targeted civilians.

Has Israel accidentally killed civilians? Yes--hard not to when Hamas deliberate locates in civilian-rich areas. Israel's citizens have mourned when Palestinian civilians have been killed.

What does Hamas do when they deliberately kill Israeli citizens? Each and every time, they take to the streets and party.

Update 4:

Trofim, Hamas has not been killing Israeli citizens--for YEARS--with sticks and stones.

You don't win wars or stop terrorists by responding to them with "proportionate" force. You win and stop them by responding with disproportionate force to the degree that they decide that their aggression against you is not worth the pain. In ONE NIGHT in World War II, American bombers killed 150,000 Japanese, mostly civilians. As a result of these raids and the two atomic bombs, we AVOIDED a full scale ground war in Japan and SAVED hundreds of thousands of lives. The whole concept of "proportional response" is absurd.

Personally, I don't care about proportionate. Countries, like people, can only take so much for so long. After that, they will snap.

And to all those who say Israel started it, then let the elderly people who were actually in Israel / Palestine before Israel came in and took over fight Israel, everyone else can lay down arms.

Not that I think Israel is the good guy necessarily, they both pretty well suck, but people have been taking land by force since the dawn of time, don't see why its any more horrible when it is done by Israel than when it is done by white christians.

    "Israel has NEVER targeted civilians."

Then their aim is pretty bad. They keep killing kids.

Tanks and bombers against sticks and stones. And the world stands by and makes resolutions that Israel won't listen to, because they never do.

Some day, someone will invent a power source that will make oil obsolete. Maybe the USA will stop being such a b*tch to Israel when they don't need a bridgehead in the Middle East anymore.

No, I don't think it is. 8,000+ rockets thrown at Israel with no regard as to where they fall, children walking on the street, parents having to carry ak47's in case they get shot at just for walking home... I'd say this show of "little" power is just enough to show them that we're done taking their crap and that the majority of the world does see that Israel has shown restraint, moreso than ANY OTHER COUNTRY would have. Their time has come, not even Egypt has sympathy.

I won't apologize for either side, but Hamas has fired over 3000 rockets into southern Israel over the past year, despite a "cease-fire" which expired 12/19.

This question was all over the news last night... and I don't think so... Israel has a right to defend itself against it's enemies... and if that means eliminating the enemy as a way of defense than by God go for it.... Israels "disproportionate" response is no different than ours against the Taliban after 9/11/01...

like the U.S. bombing Iraq or nuking and firebombing Japan?

the U.S. killed 10s of 1000s more civilians in both cases than U.S. civilian and military losses.

it might not be murder but killing unarmed civilians including women, children and babies isn't very nice.

My favorite analogy is about law enforcement. If there is only one shooter in a school, should the police be limited to one law enforcement officer?

I think it's about even. When you kill a man, you also kill all possible descendants. Every murder is a genocide.

If you punch me, I'm gonna punch you back.

If you punch me again, I'm gonna hit you with a baseball bat.

If you punch me again, I'm gonna shoot you.

    Just my honest opinion.

    Now from the flip side...

If you hit me with a baseball bat, and I don't have anything else to hit you with... I'm gonna try to be reasonable so you don't hit me again... or shoot me.
