What limits on freedom are essential to maintaining life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?

A lot of people seem to think that limits on freedom is repressive. However, yelling that there is a fire in a theater when there is not a fire is a valid limit on the freedom of speech. What other limits do you think are essential?

Your example is good, but what about in business?

When government guards our health and working conditions from unscrupulous employers, they are limiting a freedom to conduct their business as they want. It is a parallel to protecting us from dangerous or harmful products. Think about food quality at the end of the 1800's, and early 1900's.

Limits should be open to voters, and not be exclusively done by government. Too much power has been given to the government and not enough retained by the people, who the government is supposed to be representing, not controlling.

Freedom to bare arms. It was put in place hundreds of years ago during times of colonization and is rendered almost pointless now a days. If anything does happen it's likely to be some sort of projectile weapon i.e. a missile, what good is a gun gonna do then? You gonna shoot it? Thousands of Americans die in shootings, but not so many by invasion. Surely the primary freedom a human would have is freedom of life... So this one kinda contradicts it.

There are no limits to freedom, or there shouldn’t be other wise how are you free – though I agree with great power comes great responsibility and Freedom, true freedom, God given freedom means being free in ways we never should be (which is what our constitutions starts off saying) But with Freedom comes responsibility and the limits come in through the understanding of that. Principles, Having a line of what is good (and evil) with in a society is necessary to guide one in the Freedoms they have. You can choose to use your freedom for good or evil – Right or wrong and with that choice comes consequence you are free to do as you wish but when you cross a line set in place by society that says you have now abused the freedoms of others (the innocent or what have you) then you are forfeiting your freedom(s) which you have abused. But that is not limiting freedom, I believe we are all or should all be free to move about the cabin as we please with the inalienable rights given to us by God our creator. But again that total freedom to be free in ways we should have never been allowed to be means your freedom is limited by the rights of your fellow mans freedom

I guess or off the top of my head that is my 2 cents – I will probably go back and read It and think I am crazy But then I already knew that

The limit is when your freedom COULD physically harm or takes away the freedom from others.

I also think there has to be a baseline moral limits on freedom. The things that 99% of people would say that are just morally wrong. The thought in my mind is animal cruelty or bestiality.

Freedom comes with responsibility, just like having any powers.

In fact, just like your example, if you use that freedom to do harm or bring mischief to others, you can be prosecuted with charges ranging from libel to public disorder to attemped homicide (or homicide if people died). You still have the rights to defend yourself under the court of law though.
