Cutting lettuce ahead of time...?

I want to shred some lettuce ahead of time to eat during the week in salads. Will it get brown or icky if i do the entire head of lettuce? Or should I just shred it as i want it?

It will be ok for at least a week. It's best to shred it by hand because if you do it by a knife that will cause it to brown faster.

Don't do it as it will brown and will wilt faster.

Unless you are going to eat it straight away don't use a knife, just tear. I used to make my salads for lunch, the previous evening and generally the lettuce was pretty good.

They do tend do become rather watery.

It is the metal in a knife or shredder that turns it brown; Try shredding it on a plastic shredder or tearing it and keep in a plastic bag in the frig.

Or buy those Debbie Meyer green bags to store it in.I usually tear mine ahead of time and then I cut it with a scissors just before eating it

This is going to sound silly but it works.

I cut lettuce a head of time and it seems to go bad fast. Someone told me this trick and I thought they were nuts, but it works - I am not sure why.

Put your cut leftover lettuce in a ziplock bag - a bigger one - I usually use the gallon size. Now blow in the bag to get air in there and seal it with as much air as you can get from blowing into the bag.

I know it sounds crazy, but your lettuce will stay better longer. Try it, see if it works for you.

It will turn brown on the edges if you cut it with a knife. Try tearing into small pieces instead.
