New Years in New York seem staged and boring?

Question

I didnt get to go out for New Years this year, so I stayed at home and watched some of it on TV.  Every station covering the ball drop in New York seemed rather boring.  The crowds were in little gates separated by markers with huge gaps for the police to walk through.  No alcohol, no nothing, that made it seem like people were having a good time.

On top of that, they sold out to Nivea for everything.  They kept saying millions of people, but I never saw more than a couple thousand when they would pan out.

Has it been like this in recent years, or was this year worse than most?   I flipped between the channels a few times to see different coverage, but they all seemed horrible.  Is the over commercialization with the staging of "fun" what we have to look forward to?

i was watching it on tv for a while and it seemed boring to me too i turned it off. The crowds did look really small this year. I heard on fox news this morning the NYPD had only made one arrest all night and it was for disorderly conduct. So you know it sucked. I don't know why people go its cold you cant bring any thing and you have to stand for hours. NO THANK YOU

yah that new ball sucks!!!! it seemed like it came down too fast, the colors were ok but nothing like seeing the regular one, although I do understand the change was due to energy efficient lighting, so I can be too hard on them. 
as for the rest ppl were probably frozen solid so they didn't move much, it was only 2 degrees with wind chill. I know my butt would be wantin to see the ball fall and run inside LOL

It's a TV program - it has always been staged and boring. I think you are reading into it a bit. The ball drop has always been sad and tired - it's just that you were at home, bored, watching it this year.
