Military Retired (20yrs) and VA Disability Lump Sum?
I retired from the Navy 3 years ago after 20 years of active duty service. I receive 10% disability from the VA at $123 a month which is then subtracted from my retirement pay.
I work with many former military members who did not retire, but were medically discharged. Some have told me that they were given the option of a lump sum for their VA disability if they were at 10 or 20%. I was never given this option. Is it too late for me to ask for it? Am I eligible since I retired and not just separated?
The way I figure it, since they subtract it from my retirement pay already, wouldnt I just get my full retirement pay and the VA lump sum also?
I heard it was based on your monthly VA benefit times 12, times the number of years of your life expectancy, divided by 2. Is this correct? If so, what is the life expectancy calculated by?
Thanks

Next time congress votes on a congressional pay increase will it get turned down? They have failed just as bad as any executive at AIG.

12 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWhy did everyone applaud when Obama said "the debt we inherited"?
I can understand Obama saying that. Even though that debt had more to do with democratic congress than Bush, but why did everyone in the room break out and applaud? Is it because they like it when they blame is taken away from them? Regardless, being in a bad situation is not something to applaud about.
8 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWould a huge green meteor be a rare event?
Somewhere about 20 years ago, I was driving home from work in Bethesda, Md. While I was sitting at a light, I looked out my driver's side window to see a huge ball of green fire heading north almost parallel to Rockville Pike.
The ball appeared to be the size of several 747's, and appeared to be about 10,000 feet up or so. It took about 10 or 15 seconds before it was out of view.
I checked the news that day but there was nothing on it. I would have thought at least a few people would have seen it, but nothing that I had seen on the news reported it.
It wasnt dark outside, but not mid-day either. I remember there being clouds and this was below the clouds.
I was just reading about this green comet and it made me think of that day.
So is this an extremely rare event, or does this happen all the time?

With the new bill that Obama passed yesterday, it says that women shall get paid the same as men for equal work.
Ok, well what if a woman is making more than a man? Will the compensate the man?
Will they have to disclose everyone's salary to everyone so that everyone knows what everyone else makes?
I am a contractor that works usually in Iraq. I can be fired for telling other employees what my salary is. How did she know what the others were making?
4 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoWhy do people follow celebrities around like crazy?
Every time I go through the grocery store I see a dozen magazines that have "exclusive photos" of whoever the flavor of the week is. I cant flip through the TV stations without seeing a dozen shows about what the "famous" people are doing.
Obviously someone cares or they wouldnt have so many magazines and TV shows. But Why? I dont get it. Who cares about an actor's affair or who they give birth to. Can anyone explain the fascination?

5 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoGovernment retirement benefits?
Is there a website that says how much, or what percentage of your pay you will receive if you retire from the government?
I recently retired from the military, and I have heard that there is a program that I can relinquish my military retirement pay and that my years of service will count towards government retirement as well as get a step increase. Anyone know about this?

I am 39 years old, had some blood work done and the Dr didnt say anything about it. On the print-out it says "out of range" and gives the values of normal to the right. So is it that bad? Do I just need to change my diet and exercise more? Do I need to take medication?
Also, I am struggling with what foods to eat and what not to eat. For everything I read that says something is good, I read two things that says its bad.
3 AnswersHeart Diseases1 decade agoNew Years in New York seem staged and boring?
I didnt get to go out for New Years this year, so I stayed at home and watched some of it on TV. Every station covering the ball drop in New York seemed rather boring. The crowds were in little gates separated by markers with huge gaps for the police to walk through. No alcohol, no nothing, that made it seem like people were having a good time.
On top of that, they sold out to Nivea for everything. They kept saying millions of people, but I never saw more than a couple thousand when they would pan out.
Has it been like this in recent years, or was this year worse than most? I flipped between the channels a few times to see different coverage, but they all seemed horrible. Is the over commercialization with the staging of "fun" what we have to look forward to?
3 AnswersNew York City1 decade agoXmas show mistakes, anyone ever notice this?
Ok so today Yahoo had this little story about mistakes made in Xmas shows, http://primetime.tv.yahoo.com/
Now I had another one... When I was a kid I remember watching "Frosty the Snowman". He came to life when he wore the hat. In one scene he is going down a hill with a bunch of kids, or maybe it was one I forget, but his hat comes off while he is going down and nothing happens. I remember asking my sister about it, and she said "maybe it fell off by accident". Well its a cartoon, that means someone had to draw it coming off.
Just seemed strange that the artist had no idea about the story he was writing, and this made it to the show.
5 AnswersChristmas1 decade agoAu Pairs? What are the limitations?
I am a single father and have recently been offered a well paying job in the Northern Virgina area. With the high pay comes plenty of travel. I dont know the exact amount of travel, but sometimes for two weeks or so.
Anyway, I was researching nannies and au pairs online. My son is 12 years old, and doesnt have any special needs, I just cant leave him alone while I travel. I read on a website that au-pairs can only work so many hours per week and have other limitations. I really just need her to cook for him while I am gone, and make sure he does his homework, and goes to school. If I am gone for 24 hours per day, is that considered that she is working 24 hours per day?
Am I better off getting a nanny? I looked at a website, but looks like a nanny will cost me about $2000 a month. Its not out of the question, but I guess if I get a nanny her life will be pretty easy. I can cook and clean for myself and my son when I am there. But I would need someone full time because my travel is with short notice and I wouldnt want to have to search for someone new every time I had to go out of town.
Thanks
