Okay, so Another Question about Spiritual Protocol?

I am all about this stuff today! So during Christmas break, I was doing some last minute Christmas shopping and a mother was asking another what she thought about a book. It was a book on Fairys and her daughter apparently would love it as she is a fairy enthusiast. The other mother told her that she would never buy a book that would deter her daughter from the teachings of the Lord. I couldn't for the life of e figure out how a book on fairies would do that! This was one of those times where I think that people take the teachings of the Bible way too literally. I have a daughter who believes in Santa Claus and also knows Jesus. Am I confusing her or leading her astray by allowing her to believe in Santa, or if she wanted to, fairies? I do not personally believe God is so strict. I live Irish history and one of their biggest things in their folklore was of about fairies and they are very Catholic. What do you think? Is it okay to allow your children to believe in fairies and Santa and the Easter bunny? Are you doing a disservice to God by doing so?

Update:

Interesting answer, Pike. I have never seen a thirty year old believeing in fairies, but of course many believing in the Lord. I think the difference is just that; fable and Faith. The two aren't anywhere near being the same thing; to me in my beliefs, that is.

As long as my children are young enough to enjoy the fun of these fables, we'll enjoy them. But when they get old enough to question them, I won't lie to them. Otherwise, when they are challenged concerning their Christian faith, will they presume that I lied about that as well?

I think you are correct. There is nothing wrong with Santa Claus, fairies, the Easter Bunny and the like. They in no way compete with divine truth. Even though all those things are fanciful, and we enjoy the fantasy, they can not ever hold out as life-long beliefs (even when silly adults claim to do so) because they are not based in truth.

  • You almost forgot to mention "The Great Pumkin" LOL. Imagination and fantasy are where small children live. To stifle this critical part of their development is a crisis. If they have this part of their mind throttled how will they be able to make simple adjustments when life throws them a curve. Everything is not black and white and people need to be able to develop the ability to extrapolate cause/effect/and correction through imagination. How sad, to have been a child and not be able realize for themselves when older, what makes sense and what does not.
