what do blood tests show?

i went to the dr today about my eating disorder and she was pretty adament that i had blood tests done asap. but what will they actually show? also, when i weighed this morning my scale read 90lbs but hers read 96 =/ could that be because i was fully clothed and it was during the day. would it really make that much difference? i'm worried now that my scales are off

Of the five answers posted as I'm writing this, Kay gave you an EXCELLENT answer. I really don't have much to add to her answer except that I'm concerned that you drew a =/ next to 96 pounds. Unless you're under 5-feet tall, you should NOT be under 100 pounds. PERIOD. Muscle weighs more than fat. 99% percent of normal guys are NOT attarcted to a skinny girl. You may not think you're skinny, but THAT'S the PROBLEM. You already admit to an eating problem. You need to WAKE UP and understand why the word 'problem' is part of your issue. Sounds like you need some "tough love" b4 you kill yourself.....But as a direct "answer" to you, I just wanted to use my answer to tell you the nurse, Kay, gave you the best answer thus far.

Hi. Your doctor will do or will have done a a Complete blood count, TFT (Thyroid Function Test), tests to assess the function of major body organs, she will also check for any signs of malnutrition- condition of skin, hair and nails, lack of nutrients will also be highlighted in your blood test.

Anorexia is not defined by how much you weigh. Anorexia is an eating disorder, often characterised by the fact one is losing weight through their mental state, rather than there being a physical cause- such as thyroid disorders or any other illness.

Your mental health will also be assessed at some point. Warning signs are if people feel fat, even though they are within normal BMI range, losing weight (more than one stone in a two month period), feel a loss of control where food is concerned and in some cases inducing vomiting.

It's impossible to say whose scales were more accurate. Your clothes are unlikely to weigh 6lbs though.

First blood tests show if you are deficient in anything, like iron or if there is anything wrong with your body that means you are losing weight (we know there's not but doctors have to check!).

The scales thing it matters what type of floor they are on, like carpets show you weigh less, its usually more accurate to weight your self on the most solid level floor in you house. You clothes would have made you weigh more but 6lbs is a bit much but also had you drank a lot or eaten (silly question i know!)

My scales say i weigh more than i do usually by about 2lbs! lol but not 6 so there might be something iffy with yours.

Good luck & Hope the doctos went alright

Blood tests will show lots and lots of things, depending on exactly what the doctor is having tested. If you're not eating enough, it's a possibility that organs can be damaged. Blood tests can show this. That's right, if you are anorexic, organs get very damaged. Pls. follow thru and don't worry about the scales. Yes you can weigh more in middle of day than first thing in a.m. and of course clothing adds weight.

I think doctors have much more sensitive scales. Blood tests can show a lot of things, sometimes they're used if you're taking medication to see what the levels are.If its an eating disorder you have, she may be checking your iron levels. You can always ask them though.

If you are anorexic she was checking your bloods to see if you needed to be admitted to hospital urgently.

People can die from their eating disorders.

Worring whether your scales are wrong is the least of your problems

it is likely her scale is more accurate than yours. She is getting those blood tests to find out if your liver is functioning normally, to see if you are perhaps hyperthyroid, and to see how your kidneys are functioning. She is also looking for abnormal enzyme levels. You see when you are anorexic, the internal organs get damaged and she is trying to find out just how damaged they may be.
