Do you think punk is truly dead?

Someone posted a question about the Subhumans, and I said something about The Exploited.... which makes me ask... Is punk truly dead?

In the wake of people like Green Day, and Good Charlotte do you think that punk is now watered down anger pop?

Update:

EDIT.. yeah, NOFX and the Dropkicks are still there, and I would even say Rancid has some good cred, but come on... Green Day? Punk? What ever happened to people liking Circle Jerks or Black Flag?

oh and STFU kid... that's so adorable.

Update 2:

oh, and yeah...what about the guys still touring as Misfits? WTF is that all about?

A lot of people lately have been talking about the Brit bands, well what about the American ones? Black Flag & Circle Jerks? Now those were great Punk bands. More Punk bands? Like how about these American bands too?

Have you ever heard of the Candy Snatchers--

    Or these guys? Streetwalkin' Cheetahs--

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MbXC0p7Y6I

Those for a couple of examples, but also in regards to the old school, nobody lately has been talking much about the old school American Hardcore as much besides NOFX, what about that? As far as Misfits, it just isn't quite the same without Danzig singing, plus they only have one original member left now as I recall. I do remember seeing the Dickies on tour & this classic Punk band not too long ago, maybe a couple of years ago I think--

Plus this band I saw about a couple of years ago too--

Plus here's another band I saw around a bit earlier than others--

I've seen a lot more bands live than that too, some weren't just Punk though cause I get into other stuff too like Industrial, Noise & other stuff too. There's only one kind of Punk I would call green day or blink 182 not Punk but posers.

Could this question have been brought on by my previous question?

    =)

Well, people these days seem to have a pretty distorted image on punk. Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, Panic At The Disco, I have all seen those be labeled as "punk" just plain PUNK, not even pop-punk, just plain punk...There are a couple punk bands such as The Casualties, Cheap Sex, Lower Class Brats, and more, but they're not THAT good. The Casualties, people said used to be good but they became too mainstream when they started going to the warped tour, which is why they are considered as "sell outs" by most people (I never really liked them even before they were considered as sell outs). I don't think there are a lot of punk fans out there anymore. If they say they liked punk, the only punk bands included are the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash etc...There ARE others out there you know?

Yeah, compare the classic Misfits to them now...Completely different...

I think TRUE punk is dead...bands like The Clash, Fear, The Ramones, and the ORIGINAL Misfits...aren't around anymore...thats when Punk stood for something. Punk today (if you can call it that) sickens me...how is Avril Lavigne punk? and bands like Good Charlotte and Blink 182...its just not punk...at least to me. Punk was an answer to a time when authority and government was in question. Long Live old Punk!

Yes, it's been dead since at least 1978, according to Crass.

But in all honesty, even the early punk scene was full of bands that had little integrity and were just corporate puppets (Sex Pistols anyone?). There have always been crappy bands who were out in the spotlight selling themselves, and they get the most attention. But there have always been and still are plenty of great bands that remain underground and stick to the DIY ethics of punk.

You honestly do have a good point there, but I'd have to say no. Yes, some bands have evolved into a bit more anger pop and such. Though, there is still some out there, you just have to find it. Besides, we haven't let go of the Blink 182 days, either. They rocked x) It has been drastically dying from what it was, but the stuff that's still out there is keeping it strong. I think there'll be a big comeback, even though it hasn't left; All depends on if we come back to our senses music wise. Now that the majority of followers are listening to those dreaded Jonas Brothers (ick) and the other impurities of good music tastes, there isn't as much hope for rock and so as us, the listeners, think there should be. The public's been exposed to the garbage out there, so it's deprived 'em of good stuff. Either way, it is out there, and once you find it, it's awesome ^.<

A few punk rockers; (Some haven't hit big time yet, so hopefully when they do, punk'll be revived a bit.)

    Hit the Lights

    Greenday

    Farewell

    Sum 41

Plus 44 (what Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker from Blink 182 are in)

Angels & Airwaves (what Tom Delonge from Blink 182 is in)

    NOFX

    MxPx

    Mariana's Trench

    Pennywise

    New Found Glory

    Fall Out Boy

    Cartel

    Bodyjar

    All Time Low

There is many, many more; So as you can see, it's not ENTIRELY dead. I'm mentioning Blink 182, though. It's all punk, and they're plainand simply awesome. Boxcar Racer, too; they're a side project of Blink 182. Keeprockin', and be one of the ones to keep it around. xD

    Luck;

Dude, rock will by no ability die. i do no longer comprehend if there will be yet another Elvis, grateful lifeless, Beatles, and so on, yet their song lives on. as long as human beings love and revel in listening, then i think of that qualifies. i'm not sure of your age and if it even concerns, yet rock developed from the huge bang concept while specific activities sparked the rejection of norms and Utopian values, and lots song got here from that insurrection, additionally the Viet Nam conflict, to no longer point out the civil rights stream. It substitute right into a era of upheaval, and between the outcomes substitute into the incredibly much God like worshiping of the bands making a song the words, and the song got here 2d to the insurrection. Then got here the acid, and interior the very commencing up, it substitute into criminal. those activities won't take place lower back, so i can not say if song is going to take the worldwide be hurricane. yet Rock, lifeless? Hell, have you ever seen Phish?

Strung Out, Propagandhi, A Wilhelm Scream, Millencolin, Pennywise, Suicide Machines, and so forth are still going on too. And there's plenty of similar sounding bands still up and coming to fill the place eventually. It's not dead, it's just even less mainstream.

    First, The Exploited rock.

Second, yeah punk is dead. it is all contrived today. the commercially successful "punk" bands are a joke. give me Fear, Zeke, The Misfits, Deak Kennedys, Buzzcocks, Melvins, Samhain, MC5, Bad Brains or the Exploited anytime.

You know if you think about it all music coming out today is really awful. (with the exception of TOOL)

Like all good music I think its on hiatus during The 00s. So unfortunately we have to live through 2 more years of this mainstream crap until real music comes back.So no I dont think Punk or any real music is dead.Theyr all just taking a break

Edit-You cant expect those bands to live forever. I'll Always listen to the clash, the ramones, ect but The beatles stoped making music and people moved on to other bands while still liking them.

Edit-It seams I now have my own personal troll

nah. Its just on hiatus. I think the punk phase will come back.

    EDIT

What about The Distillers, Bad Religion, Goldfinger

I dont think Bowling For Soup has a right to claim 'punk'
