What can I use for gerbil bedding?

What household product can be used for gerbil / small rodent bedding?

I use the fluffy gerbil bedding, but I'm all out of it, and I can't go to the store. Any suggestions????

The best bedding to use is Aspen, Corn Cob or Carefresh bedding. If you can't go to the store you can always order it online and it will be delivered to you within a few days. If it really can't wait that long plain white, unscented toilet paper (even better if its the cheap recyclable one) is the best option. Or even plain white unscented tissues. Shred them into long strips and leave some whole for the gerbils to have fun with.

I don't recommend using toilet paper for a long time as it does start to smell rather fast and needs to be changed more frequently as it can cause health issue over a long period of time.

DO NOT use Pine or Cedar Wood Shavings as they cause respiratory and liver problems as well as allergy, Newspaper is not a good idea as the ink is poisonous for rodents in general, specially gerbils as they love to chew on everything.

    Hope this helped.

First of all, if you have a gerbil you should want to take as best care of it as you can, which means getting some bedding from the store. It doesn't have to be the best most expensive bedding, just as long as it isnt cedar. Also what I used to do when i had gerbils is take an old pair of boxers and cut it into strips and in addition to the bedding, i'd put in a few strips of the cut up boxers so that they can build themselves a comfortable nest. I'd also put in a medium to large size can (with sanded edges so they dont cut themselves) so if you dont want to get them a mini house cuz that might be "too expensive" you can do this affordable method of making your pet comfortable

I doubt you have any aspen wood chips in your house so most likely I would give them a lot of toilet paper, unscented, unlotioned, just plain toilet paper. Careful on what you are using for bedding (is this to fill the entire cage or just as nesting material?). Make sure you only use Carefresh or Aspen bedding or recycled paper, hypoallergenic bedding. I think of the bedding material for hamsters (the really fluffy stuff) and there are many potential health hazards to using it. (their limbs dying because of cut-off circulation, suffocation, ingestion, etc.) Please be careful.

use a handful toilet paper, gerbils love it, espically when you leave the cardboard paper roll in there too for them to play in.

dont use newspaper because of the ink. i would use either ripped printer paper or put ripped paper towels or u could put washcloths/towels in the cage and he will be fine- u could also use cotton balls

shredded paper, fleece, and give them some loo rolls- they'll chew it up to make bedding =)
