What is the best brand of baby formula on the market today?

I'm pregnant with my second child (due in May) and wanted to have formula ready as a back-up. My first son drank the Enfamil Lipil with Iron, but, due to recent findings of melamine and cyanuric acid in baby formulas, I was looking for another brand. Both Nestle's Good Start and Similac also were found to have trace amounts of the substances in their formulas as well.

Any thoughts?

I do plan on asking the doctor, but wanted some mothers' opinions as well!

Thanks!

Update:

EDIT: Not to correct anyone, but, I will anyway. There absolutely were amounuts of both melamine and cyanuric acid (a melamine derivative) found in American baby formulas. Both Nestle's Good Start and Similac had trace amounts of melamine while the Enfamil had trace amounts of the cyanuric acid. I don't care if the amounts are that small- I'd rather play it safe. Kidney failure and reproductive harm aren't something I want to chance.

I have had four children on four different formulas. Each need was different: one had sensetive GI, another could not have diary, another could not have iron.

Perhaps before you see your pediatrician, check out a health food/natural food store and discuss the formulas available there. Your pediatricain is the person who will guide you the best.

There was at least 10,000 times more melamine in the Chinese formula than in the American formula, because in China they added it to make the protein content seem higher. The melamine in American formulas was really in trace amounts, and was found in all the major formula brands if I remember correctly. In fact, melamine is a metabolite of some pesticides, so you can probably find it in all sorts of foods. In trace amounts it's not dangerous.

Anyway... my son was very colicky while on breastmilk, and he improved a lot when we switched to formula. The formula that worked best on him was the Nestle Good Start with natural cultures. But then and again, all babies are different. Some formulas are easier to clean out of the bottle than others... Soy based formulas for example were a ***** to clean after whereas Good Start with natural cultures will disappear with just a rinse. :)

Ive always used Enfamil with all my kids; now I use Similac with my son because thats all WIC would offer me. Enfamil worked great with him but he took longer getting use to the Similac

Everyone has their own favorite, or a specific kind that works well for their child. For my son it is Parents Choice milk based with Iron. We started him on Enfamil, but it didn't work well for him...what works well for some, might not be best for you.

I personally like that Parents Choice is half the price of the brand names. And also, it mixes completely with no bubbles, and no need to wait for it to settle.

This is all just my preference of course. Congrats on your upcoming arrival.

The malamine in baby formula was only an issue in China.

We use Similac Organic. I just felt more comfortable giving her organic becuase I can pronounce the first 5 ingredients. I REALLY wanted to & TRIED (very hard) to breastfeed but there were many factors which contributed to me making the decision to introduce formula.

It's entirely up to you as far as which brand....my Dr recommended Similac and I chose the organic formula.

Good Start offers more coupons and has the least amount of sugar.

Make your own. There is absolutely no commercial formula with any demonstrable benefit over the old-time homemade 'formula' of cow's milk diluted and sweetened (with a little too-early solids for vitamin back-up).

Here are instructions, via a 1998 edition of an AAP manual: http://books.google.com/books?id=CDRlspRDeboC&pg=P...
