Because they were not marked as medics. If you had looked a the pictures, you would have seen that there are no bullet holes in the medics cover only in the body. This means that the markings were put on after the fact. So the Israeli troops did not know who they were. Yes. They committed numerous violations culminating in the one that disintegrated the truce. On Nov. 4 they attacked and killed five Gazans from the air. But throughout the truce period they made numerous tank incursions to crush crops around Khan Younis,invariably shooting a few onlookers every time,most of whom died. Last September in one week of tank crop-crushing incusions they shot an killed a 70-year-old man,a 12-year-old boy and a 55-year-old woman,simply for watching the tanks. These are not soldiers; they are criminal psychopaths and their "government" is simply a psychopathic death cult.

There were brief response shelling to hamas and fatah (Al aqsa martyrs brigade) rocket fire during the truce period mainly to keep militants away from firing rockets, but the larger civilian population was never in any danger. However, Israel stayed pretty true to the truce, but it was hamas that seemed to defy it, using the blockade as an excuse for the launching.

The blockade began when Hamas took over the Gaza strip in June 2007, the territory thus became a terrorist controlled territory. The blockade was imposed to prevent fighting from carrying over into Israel, to prevent terrorists from entering Israel, and to prevent the shipment of militant supplies to the terrorist groups. However, Israel let in enough food and supplies to provide for the basic needs of the palestinians. Also, when necessary, extremely ill palestinians were taken to Israeli hospitals to be treated. When palestinians tried to retaliate, Israel would lower it's fuel and electricity supplies to Gaza in order to punish the palestinians for their actions. Also, there was hope that citizens would be fed up with their quality of life and turn away from the militant groups and be more accepting towards Israelis.

After Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, they never launched any attacks. It was only when Hamas declared the truce over some days ago did Israel launch their air strike. I hope I answered without any personal bias.
