    Hello,

The Asker inquires: "What are zionists trying to accomplish?":

“Zionism” is Jewish nationalism, (were it to be considered “wrong” then the nationalism of other nations would also have to be wrong, for example Arab nationalism).

Since the Jewish people regained their nationhood within their ancestral homeland,  Zionism today is the desire to protect that re-establishment of Israel within its historic homeland, with Zion – Jerusalem as its capital (as of previous Jewish states in the land), while respecting its neighbors.

What is now known as East Jerusalem (aka the “Old City”), was the capital of all the previous Jewish kingdoms of Judah and (united) kingdom of Israel.

"The State of Israel has a population of approximately 9,227,700 inhabitants as of July 2020.

Some 74.24% are Jews of all backgrounds (about 6,829,000 individuals),

20.95% are Arab of any religion other than Jewish (about 1,890,000 individuals),

while the remaining 4.81% (about 434,000 individuals) are defined as "others", including

persons of Jewish ancestry deemed non-Jewish by religious law

and persons of non-Jewish ancestry who are family members of Jewish immigrants (neither of which are registered at the Ministry of Interior as Jews),

    Christian non-Arabs,

    Muslim non-Arabs

and all other residents who have neither an ethnic nor religious classification.[4]"

While Israel is a multicultural country with diverse ethnicities and religions, it is also indeed a home for the Jewish People (Re-established within the Jewish ancestral homeland); something for which the Jewish People have no need to apologize - to anyone !

    Brief historical background:

Using “Palestine” to negate the name Israel for the land is misleading, as there has never been any indigenous sovereign state of “Palestine”. The only valid name for the land belongs to the Jewish indigenous sovereign states before the Re-establishment of Israel in 1948: “Israel” or “Judah”.

The Jewish people are the indigenous people of their ancestral homeland of Israel with unbroken presence there since Biblical times:

Israel is Re-established within the Jewish ancestral homeland. The Jewish people have had previous sovereign states in the land of Israel, for example - Map of the post-Biblical Jewish Hasmonean Kingdom of Judah (aka Judea) including: (What is now known as the) West Bank (of the prior Jewish kingdoms of Judah and Samaria), Gaza, and Golan Heights, capital (what is now EAST) Jerusalem / “Old City”; between 110 BCE / 754 BH and 63 BCE / 706 BH:

    I hope this helps.

    Robert.
