Christians, why do you mistake atheism for nihilism?
So many Christians here and elsewhere seem to think that "atheists believe in nothing", and that atheists are negative, angry, hateful, unfulfilled, not goal oriented, immoral, hedonistic misanthropes, etc., etc. How can you not know that there is so much wonder and beauty in this world and in this life regardless of whether or not one believes in a deity? Not believing in a god does not in any way mean we believe in nothing. Many of us believe in the potential of humans to do good, we believe in our family and friends, we believe in ourselves, we love, we are loved, we ponder the awesomeness of nature and the universe, we enjoy wonder, we love mystery and when we solve one mystery often new mysteries are born. Life is good even without gods, and life is even more precious without a belief in eternal life.

Matthew T: wrong. I do not see a design or a plan or only the good. Nor do I seek "a fix". Are you saying I don't really love my son but only see him as a "fix"? Then you must be the nihilist here, not me. I can handle the fact that there is complexity in the universe and in humans. I can see the good while also knowing, and seeing, there is bad.

Love is good, beauty is good, wonder is good. Anger is bad, hate is bad, immorality is bad, etc. From your words, I think that you believe that the universe has a plan or design and that you are in tune with that design. But atheism has no worldview to elevate those qualities above mere shots of "feel-good" drugs in the brain. You're not really seeking love, you're seeking a fix; not seeking beauty, you're seeking a fix; not seeking wonder, you're seeking a fix. In the atheist worldview, the universe doesn't applaud your love, beauty and wonder and there is no plan. There are no brownie points, no attaboys; all of those exist only in your imagination.
The only way atheism doesn't turn into nihilism is through self deception.

You're right. I do see a purpose to my life, to live it to the most I can get from it while at the same time not to infringe on others. Why do I need a book to tell me the difference between right and wrong? Why do I need some supernatural being looking over my shoulder?

look, it is not significant what fake faith, cult, or cultic concept one subscribes to. there is in undemanding terms one fact, no longer many. The God of the Bible does what no different so-observed as god tries to do - He wisely predicts the destiny a hundred% of the time and He placed His predictions in writing. If what He says is contradicted by way of another so-observed as god, fake faith, cult, or cultic concept, he's no longer the only that is incorrect. He has shown Himself. maximum worldly human beings worship money, so permit me use a money analogy: If something has a real fee of twenty money and somebody needs to purchase it, yet they simply have one greenback and fifty 3 cents, one does no longer frequently have the skill to purchase the ingredient that expenses twenty money. you may even nonetheless purchase something that has a value equivalent to or lesser than what they have of their pocket. fake religions, cults and cultic ideals say to us, "right here is something this is strictly comparable to Christianity and has precisely an identical fee." Then they are keen to sell it to us for fifty 3 cents. it is obviously a decrease priced faux - A knock-off of the genuine ingredient. desire to appreciate the thank you to properly known a faux? Get to appreciate the genuine ingredient in my opinion. handle it daily. look heavily at it and learn it. Then while the faux pops up it is going to likely be recognizable immediately. this is the theory the U.S. secret provider makes use of to coach its workers the thank you to % out faux money. they do no longer learn the faux with the intention to properly known the faux, they learn the genuine ingredient with the intention to % out the faux. you are able to understand this in case you're keen.

Firstly, I don't think most of them know the difference. Second, I don't think they care. Perhaps one day things will change.
