Can someone help me with my tax question? ?

My husband and i just got married in Aug of 08. We will be filing jointly this year and we know that he owes some back child support. Its not all of our return so we will be getting some back. Can we still do rapid refund or will we be waiting for our refund for a while?

Update:

and what if we didnt do rapid refund? could we do like the 10 day thing?

It is based on the bank policies, and last I heard, the banks would probably deny it.

Which is a good thing. The RALs are not at all a good deal.

If your account has been flagged for capture of any portion of your refund you will not be able to get a "rapid refund" loan. None of the banks offering the loans will grant the loan if there is ANY doubt about your full refund being issued.

If you opt to have your refund sent directly to your bank by the IRS it will post within 8 to 14 days in most cases, however if there's an offset in the works you should expect a delay of at least 30 days on top of that.

Congratulations on planning on allowing the refund to pay off the back child support and getting it over with. This is a bill that really should get paid off.

The IRS does have an injured spouse form--in a pinch, the spouse that doesn't owe the child support can file it and ask that no part of their refund go to the debt. It's a lousy form as it delays the refund by 2-3 months and doesn't get the bill over with.

If you owe back child support, usually no bank product is available to you. The bank does not know how much of your refund will be released to you, and so does not know how much to advance you. The preparer does not know if there will be enough refund left after the offset to pay the tax preparer.

Your best (and cheapest) option is to do your taxes yourself, or pay the preparation fees up front. Your refund will may be delayed a bit because of the offset.

RALs are "all or nothing". If even $1 is flagged for capture, the RAL will be denied.

A normal direct deposit takes 8-14 days depending on the day the return is accepted by the IRS.
