Bank/ATM machine in Vietnam ? Estimated trip budget ? ?

My husband and I plan to go to Vietnam this May. We will be staying for 3 weeks. Are ATM machines easy to find there ? Will all major US bank be accepted (I have Washington Mutual)? Should I bring credit cards too ?

The average ticket price I found is about $1300 from San Fran to Saigon. Is that about right ?

We will be staying at my parents' house in Da Nang but plan to take trips to Ha Noi and Ha Long Bay. Would $3,000-4,000 be comfortable?

This is my first trip home after 5 years. Thank so much for your time.

Update:

I have heard there's a $3,000 limitation on cash coming in and out of Vietnam (as carry-on). Is that true ?

Yes!! there are ATM machine in Vietnam..and yes, only if you have Visa or Master Card label on your ATM card. But I would leave the card home. You will not get a good money exchange if you use the card..Cash in mint $100 bill are more valuable.

$3000-$4000 is enough for two for 3 weeks,

$100 mint will get around $1.8 million Viet Dong at local jewelry store.

Do not exchange at the airport..Be sure to bring new $100 bill and don't fold them..

$1300 is about the right price in May..

While in Da Nang, don't forget to go to Ngu Hanh Son and Hoi An

    Welcome home my friend!!!

ATM's are everywhere in Vietnam, As everyone has said aslong as its a visa or mastercard you will be fine. Remember that baks charge for withdrawing money out in forgein countries so maybe see how much they charge.

Also no one has mentioned that USD can be used in many places in Vietnam. Make sure you have a lot of small notes as they might give you your change in dong and it always works out that they do better than you with the exchange rate then.

Also $3000-$4000 is a lot of money to take for 3 weeks. I was there for a month a few months ago and had to pay for accommodatio, food and drink everyday aswell as travell and only spent around $800 and I bought quite a lot also.

Yeah, there are a lot of ATMs around. They'll take anything VISA or Mastercard. I brought my WaMu card over there before and never really had an issue. You get more out of your money, if, let' say, you bring a crisp $100 bill and exchange it over there.

But if you want to use your card, just bring your WaMu card. Leave everything else at home.

I'm flying out of SF to Ho Chi Minh on January 31st. Can't wait.
