my compurter is acting up. can any one PLEASE help me?

i have internet through my cable company, (as i do my phone as well as my tv too.) lately whenever i am using internet explorer, it like freezes, and says internet explorer has stopped responding. and if it is responding, it is soooo s l o w that it seems like it isnt working. alot of times it will have a msg box come up saying i have to connect to the internet and it asks me if i want to connect and its like dial up. i think it says broadband. also, whenever i am checking my email, which is yahoo, it will freeze alot. sometimes control alt delete doesnt even work to get it unfroze. if i try to answer an ad like on craigslist, it says it doesnt recognize yahoo. so it wont let me respond. then also periodically while i am on computer doing different things, it will go blank and a blue screen will come up saying something about microsoft windows detected and error so shut down so as not to damage my computer. these r all very frustrating and i have no clue if they r each something different, or all related. i dont know if i have given u enough info to go on. i have a year old gateway pc with windows vista on it, which was not too long ago updated to windows vista ultima. i have an extended warranty with the geek squad on it still, but dont think its a comp fault, is it? if u could even help with an answer to part of my problems i would be so very thankful to u!!!!

Update:

thanks so much for the quick responses. i am trying them all

That blue screen that is popping up is called "The Blue Screen of Death". There's something wrong. Have you run a virus scan lately, a spyware scan? You need a full system analysis. There's software that does it. It's like a complete physical for your computer. You've got a warranty and the Geek Squad so let them take care of it. It could be something as simple as a missing dll file or something big like a dying hard drive. You should try to get your machine looked at as soon as possible.

This sounds like a software problem. This could have happened when you updated to Vista Ultimate.

Updating the operating system usually results in problems, I always try to do a clean installation, unless the client insists on an update type.

First step is to run check disk. This is built into Windows. To run it, open start-computer. Right click on the hard drive that Windows is installed on. Choose properties-tools-error checking.

When you click the button "check now", a dialog will open that says complete control of the hard disk is needed. Schedule a check for the next time you restart the computer.

Check disk will run and check for file system errors and bad hard drive sectors (if you chose both options) when you restart.

If you have a large hard drive, it will run for a while. You can allow it to run on its own. It will correct any errors found and mark any bad sectors on the hard drive. One way of telling that you have a bad hard drive is that when you run this program, you will get a nearly continuous list of errors.

Hopefully this will solve your problems.

First thing geek squad is a scam that bestbuy is running. I know many people that went to geek squad and that geek squad erased everything on their hard drive. The problem you are having seems to be hardware incompatibility with Vista. This is not news, Vista has been giving majority of its users an ultimate headache. If you have any data on your computer save it.

After saving your data, go through any recent programs you installed on your computer, if you have any program that you do not need, uninstall it.

Do a hardware compatibility check on this site http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/

And my personal opinion is to simply use Ubuntu, almost all of your headaches that came with Vista will be eliminated.

    Thank You
