Good for you for asking these questions, instead of just dumping him.
The bad news:
Condoms don't protect against genital herpes, and he can give it to, even when no symptoms are present. If you have sex with him, then you WILL take some risk of catching his genital herpes.
The good news:
As long as you never, ever, EVER have sex when he has symptoms, your chances of catching his herpes is pretty low. A study with couples where one had herpes and the other didn't showed a transmission rate of 6% per year (as long as they never EVER had sex during outbreaks) and if the infected partner took Valtrex, the rate dropped by 3% per year.
More good news:
Herpes is spread through skin-to-skin contact. Not fluids. Not inanimate objects. You can NOT catch genital herpes by French kissing. The way to catch genital herpes by having genital-to-genital contact with someone who has genital herpes, or oral-to-genital contact with someone who has oral herpes.
More good news:
If you catch it, there is NO DANGER to a developing fetus. The only danger comes during the birth, when a child can catch the virus from his mother - if she is having an outbreak. Most doctors either put you on antiviral drugs, or recommend a c-section. But there are many many Mom's of healthy babies who have genital herpes.
More good news:
Your guy TOLD you that he has herpes. This means that he wants to protect you, and is honest with you. Not everyone is so brave, and most people who have genital herpes don't even know that they have it. At least you now have all the info. It's a sign that he's a responsible, caring man - but you probably already know that.
I recommend that you
a) read up about herpes. The more you learn, the better you'll feel about whatever decision you make.
b) talk to him about this. It's very scary to tell someone that you have herpes. It would be nice if you would reassure him a little bit that you appreciate his bravery, and just need to learn more.
Feel free to email me with other questions, if you'd like. I've had genital herpes for over 10 years, dated several men in the interim, and am now married. As far as I know, I've never given it to anyone.
Good question.
EDIT: I meant to add a link to the website below. My apologies. It's my fave, and is both easy to read and very reliable.

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?
But after a friend share this video everything has changed.
Natural Safe Herpes Remedy?

I got diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about three yrs ago, whilst I was still in college and had a stupid one-night stand. I realize loads of girls say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and suddenly it seemed like I was going to have to live with the implications for my entire life. The worst part was feeling I could never date men again. In the end, who wants to go out with a girl that has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/tJ0jg everything got better.
Not only was I able to eliminate all traces of the herpes simplex virus from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to start dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just a week ago, in front of everyone in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This method gave me back the chance to be happy and experience real love again. Now I hope that I can help others too by sharing this story.

You will most likely get it, throughr kising and unprotected and protected sex. If your planning on being w/ him for the rest of you life and you're pretty sure you wont have relations w/ amyone else than go for it.
