What is the best book to learn about Black history in the U.S.?

I've become very interested in learning more about Black history and the civil rights movement in the United States. I'm sure there are many great books. I've been reading "King" by David L. Lewis. If you had to pick just one book to recommend to a non-black reader, which one would you pick. I'm especially interested in the suggestions of African-Americans.

The Isis Papers by Dr. Francis Kress-Welsing is a great book that teaches you a lot about african-americans. Not as much history as you may be looking for though. This teaches you so much about the mentality of black people and white supremacy and it is so extremely interesting.

Other than that, Roots is a great book.
