whats the chances of all family members being right or left handed?

in my family mum, dad and brother are all right handed and i am a lefty.

i married a lefty and now we have two left handed kids - neither were taught to use this hand it just happened.

what are the chances of that happening and do you have a similar story?

Update:

i am glad that they finally stopped doing that nigel. it must have been frustrating to be made to do something that just didnt feel right. although in times gone by with ink pens and such there was a drama with smudging.

    Hello,

being left-handed is a recessive gene. So if both parents are left-handed, you will have left-handed kids. It's hard to explain, but I'll try my best. Biology class was a long time ago, I hope this is right.

Let's say R is right handed (dominand) and l is left handed.

Both of your parents have the genes Rl

You had one of each, and it happened to be ll, so you're a lefty.

Same thing with your husband. Two left-handed can only have left handed kids because you both have the ll genes. Except, of course, if you force them to use the right hand.

Many generations can have the left handed gene before they have a kid who is left handed.

    I hope I was clear!

Source(s): I'm left-handed. :) And so is my grand-mother. My parents and my sister are right handed. Plus what I remember from my biology class.

I would have to say it's luck of the draw!! My mum, dad, sister and I are RH, my brother is LH.(I can use both though) My mum and her 2 sisters are RH and her brother is LH. My husband and I are RH, 2 of our 3 daughters are RH and our eldest can use both still at present. So it really is just luck honey and honestly I've heard that those who are LH actually use a different part of their brain than RH people so there you go, you may be lefty but you may very well be smarter hahahaha, what does that make me then if I can use both hands hahaha, only because I broke my arm when I was a kid and had to learn to write with my left. All the best though sweetie xx

Source(s): Mum to 3 girls: 5 year old with special needs (still trying to decide which hand to use), 3 year old (r-handed) and a 15 month old (prefers her rhand)

It can be genetic, though it can also be caused by testosterone (higher levels of testosterone before birth can result in a left-handed child). There are a few left-handed people in my family, including my son, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason for which kid will be left-handed or right.

I don't know the statistics on this but I do know that everyone in my family is right-handed EXCEPT all 3 of my brother's children...he and his wife are both right-handed, but none of his children are.

Here are a bunch of things you can read about it:http://www.google.com/search?q=chances+of+being+le...

    Hi Hun,

Well all my family are right handed and now my own little family are right handed except for my son, all his Dads family are right except for his sister, so hard to say what way a child will write, i think either way the kids are unique in their own little way.

have a great day and happy 2009 my dear!x x

My husband, son and I are right handed and my daughter is left handed. When she was a baby she would grab things with her left hand and I would automatically put it in her right hand. She kept using the left hand and I finally realized she was a lefty!

My Mum and Dad were both left-handed but Mum was 'trained out of it' at school. Among their four children are two boys and two girls. One boy 'handed' each way, one girl 'handed' each way. I haven't checked whiich way the girls' children have turned out. (The boys haven't produced any live offspring yet.)

I don't think handedness is as easy to plot on a family tree as eye colour is. (Eye colour is a clearly hereditible trait.)

Me too! I have a big family but I'm the only lefty. If you have more kids, you'll find out.
