Second Life is not like other online games. Some people even refuse to consider it to be a game.

Instead think of it as being like The Sims, an online chat room and an online shopping experience all rolled into one. For these reasons, SL is very popular with girls. The guys have all their shooting, driving, fighting, killing-anything-that-moves games, and we have a gossipping and shopping game. There are plenty of guys in SL too, but some come just to try and get virtual sex.

Shopping isn't everything in SL though. You can go to nightclubs where DJs spin tunes or to live music events where real musicians stream their performances into Second Life. Some are truly awful, but there are some really good one too, including bands who play in SL, such as Space Junky and Strangefates, There is even an SL version of U2, but they are a bit of a con as they just 'mime' to U2 concert soundtracks.

Other things you can do in SL include:

    *Skydiving

    *Scuba diving

    *Car racing

    *Bike riding

    *Horse riding

    *Dancing

    *Flying

    *Sword combat

    *Gun combat

    *The aforementioned sex (LOL)

*Build things such as houses, cars, castles, furniture

*Create clothes using the system clothes, prim tools and an art program such as Photoshop

    *Join a role-playing group

*Go on a date with someone

*Get married (obviously, it doesn't count in real life)

    *Explore places

*Make friends from all over the world

Is SL fun? I think that all depends on how much imagination you have and how much you like to socialise. If you have both of these things by the bucket load, then you are going to love SL. If you like to create things you will very quickly become hooked. If you think of SL as being a huge box of toys, but old-style toys where you have to make up your own games, you won't be far wrong. It contains elements of Barbie and Ken, GI Joe/Action Man, Lego, toy cars and airplanes, Dungeons & Dragons, dolls houses, toy castles and even some spaceships. And someone acidentally left a few H P Lovecraft books in there. Of course, you can play more adult games if you wish, but whatever you do, it's all a huge 'let's pretend' and if you buy into it, it's fun.

Some people make things and sell them in SL for a profit. I've done that - not big profits, but I had a lot of fun doing it.

Really, the thing to do is sign up for a free account and try it. Make friends with a fellow newbie on Orientation Island (the first place you go when you join SL) and learn together.

And do whatever you want to do - which is the whole point of Second Life.
