without the title, you own nothing.

if he doesn't have it, he cannot legally sell it to you.

if he doesn't make the payments, the car will be repossessed.

if you pay in cash. he must give you a receipt or it doesn't legally exist.

First off always get a detailed receipt for any cash transaction. Now you basically own nothing. Contact the local highway patrol. They may want to talk to this guy. Most states have laws that govern the sale of motor vehicles. He basically sold something that didn't belong to him (yet). Go to the bank where you two were to pick up the title and speak with the loan officer. Thre may be privacy issues so don't count on too many answers but if you explain your situation they may be able to help.

Well, I would say you are going to have to call the police and show them the bill of sale. It's not really valid since he doesn't really own the car, but it can't hurt. If he doesn't pay the loan and they repossess it, you'll have to give it up. It sounds like this guy is digging himself into a big hole that he won't be able to get out of. I hope it works out, but this might end up being a life lesson that costs you $300.

Wow. You got yourself into a hole. Call the cops asap. This doesn't sound good. If he threatens you then I think you can press charges for that as well. That guy is seriously an idiot though. Why would you try to scam someone who works with you knowing that you'll see him the next day anyway? lol. Definitely report him to the authorities asap. Don't let this guy get what he wants.

You, foolishly, bought a car from someone who does not own it. I doubt from the way you have described the seller, that there will be a good outcome from this. The only way to get a title is to pay the lien-holder whatever amount is owed. Good luck.

First, use punctuation. Second, get your self an attorney. Third, go to court. Fourth, get your money back and make him pay your lawyer fees. There you go step by step way of getting your money back. By the way, you should talk to an attorney immediately. The long you wait, the less likely you will get your money back.
