Computer problem... any suggestions?
I’d like to have your input on a computer problem. J
It’s an emachine desktop, and it’s running XP sp2, with an integrated video card.
The problem: when I press the ON button the pc seems to start (I can hear the fan and the hd spinning) but the monitor is blank even after an hour (so I know it’s not the computer taking a long time to boot up).
I’d have to restart the pc manually 2-3 times before anything shows on the monitor (there are 2 quick beeps when it does start up fully). also, sometimes it won't recognize my ps2 keyboard. it always recognizes my usb mouse though.
I’ve tried replacing the power supply from a 180w to a 200w thinking it was it not getting enough power. Not it.
I’ve tried removing the ram one by one to see if any of those is faulty. There are 4 sticks. Not it.
I’ve also replaced the CMOS battery to see if that was it. Not it.
It’s a integrated video card, so I’ll have to find a spare one to test it and see if that’s the problem.
Any suggestions?
Oh, the computer had a bunch of viruses, so I restored it to factory settings. But it’s still doing the same thing.
- I have tried using a different keyboard, does the same thing.
_ONE thing i forgot to mention but not sure if it's relevant is that the fan seems to be extremely fast sometimes and sometimes goes a little slower than normal.
the computer has 4 sticks of 512's and iv'e tried removing one at a time. no luck.
i'll try a new HD and upgrade power supply. will post results later. thanks!

Go to your local computer store and see if they have an old 64bit graphics card they will sell you for $5 or so... That will be the cheapest thing to test your graphics... Other than that, you could buy one of these graphics cards. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Sub... I would think you have a PCIEx16 slot, but you need to check to be sure. Google or yahoo search the motherboard #'s or your emachine model number to find out which slot you have... There is still a possibility it is your motherboard altogether, meaning a graphics card isn't going to fix the problem... Another unlucky thing, I have fried all 4 sticks of ram at the same time before, the motherboard and ram both was fried. Most of the time this is caused by a heat issue... Emachines are notorious for being lacking in the cooling dept...
If I knew which processor you are running I could give you an idea of a micro ATX board you could go ahead and buy, instead of a graphics card. For one if it turns out that the onboard graphcis chip is the problem on your current board, most likely the problem is going to move throughout the board later down the road. You can get good micro ATX boards with onboard graphics for $50 and would eliminate you having to buy that extra graphics card.

It definitely sounds like you need a higher wattage power supply, 200W is not enough. I also have an Emachine XP SP2 and upgraded the 250W power supply that came with it. Insufficient power could damage your motherboard - everything that's plugged into your computer depends on the power supply, even adding RAM.
Good luck.

Try staring up windows task manager and if you have any idea of anything close down programs that might start running on startup that you aren't using such as AIM Yahoo Messenger and even other spyware software. Don't mess with something if you don't know what it is you could create more problems. And dont close iexplorer.exe. Normally most of the things that have the account name under user can be closed.

Sounds like a driver issue. You need an updated video driver. Also, check all cables and connections to make sure every one is nice and tight. You may be able to download the driver from the monitor's manufacturer web site from another computer, on a flash drive, and install it on the e-machines. Also, if you can find another Plug N Play monitor, try it.

Two beeps means the RAM is not working. Make sure you placing the RAM into the right slots and try again, also, they may be falling out of the RAM slots, and you may have a short on the back of your motherboard so check all of those.

The beeps indicate a hardware problem.
A bad keyboard can cause this. Most pc's won't boot without a keyboard.Borrow one or buy one they are not expensive.

as others have said before me, hard drive failing! You can try to first back-up your data on a cd or external hard drive then re format your drive. If the problem presit buy a new hard drive!

It sounds like your Hard Drive is failing.
