You might try the HavaHart trap #1040. Looking at it you will think it is too big for your needs but you will have less missed squirrels than you will with the smaller traps. Personal opinion is to transport the captured pest into a garbage can full of water for a few minutes, other wise if you take the squirrel you caught on this side of the river, that is immune to what ever diseases it has grown up with and now transport it to the other side of the river, exposing a group that may have no resistance to what ever illness yours may have and instead of killing one you may wipe out many. They don't readily consume rat bait, now and them I come across some that have, but you can pulverize the rat bait then mix it with equal amounts of peanut butter and bait the attic with that. Squirrels, unlike rats, are more likely nesting in the attic so chances are you will have to recover a smelly carcass from the attic. Moth balls can be effective from nesting in an area how ever they will just move away from the moth balls and nest in a new spot and they will surely cross any barrier of moth balls placed at the opening trying to keep them out and if you go crazy with the moth balls throwing them all around the attic you will be next spending big bucks trying to clean up the moth balls once the fumes permeate into the living space. Do not patch the opening up until you are satisfied the population is gone, they will just move over a few inches from your patch and chew through sound wood to get back into the attic.

Find out how they are getting in, and nail a board up there. Then put mothballs in your attic. The smell from the mothballs will keep them out.

Seal the hole they are using to get in.

Rent a live squirrel trap to relocate them. peanut butter on a cracker works best.

If you want to kill them a rat trap will do use peanut butter

The best thing to do is probably call someone in to do it for you, that would probably be the most humane. Or you could set traps for them.

Try to find where they're getting in and pour a box of mothballs there...They don't like mothballs and won't cross them.. :-)

    Or get a cat.
