DVD/ROM drive reads movies dvds but not game dvds?
I just rebuilt my computer, using xp pro now. I kept my old dvd/cd drive, which is an NEC ND 3550A. I can play movie dvds, can load programs from regular cd rom, but I put a game (data) dvd in and nothing happens. Try to look at the contents and still nothing. What is going on?

The DVD laser may be weak or the laser optics covered in dust. What is happening is the drive has no problem following along and reading the disc data in sequence for a movie. A data DVD is out of sequence and it forces the laser pickup to jump around more. A weak pickup causes read errors and when jumping around, it may cause so many read errors that it loses track of where it is reading on the disc.
It may still read CD's ok for now. A different laser is used to read CD's and the lager dots on the disc are easier to read.
Try a cleaning CD and see if it helps.. Or you can take the drive apart and manually clean it. Most shops will just replace the drive as cleaning could end up costing as much as a new drive.
If cleaning doesn't help, time for a new drive.

You could try a cleaning kit, but it sounds like the laser has died. Get an external USB drive☺

It's windows, and you might have 'autorun' disabled, or a strange 'format' setting somewhere stopping it starting-up! Search for it & make the adjustments!
