Is Tim Tebow Overrated?
I asked this exact question before but it was in the morning and didnt get a lot of responses. I want to know what people think. Keep in mind that I do like Tim Tebow. Also, someone last time said that Tebow was the only one of the players I mentioned at the end to win 2 titles. Frazier and Leinart both was two titles (and as starters).
As a christian who likes football I kinda like Tim Tebow, but after hearing the game last night, its clear the announcers overrate him. Ive decided to break down his awards/ stats to see how good he really is (Im obviously going to focus on the negative because if you want to hear the positive you can turn on ESPN).
Heisman Trophy- Its nice, but it means nothing. Plus, its a media biased award that doesnt include the most important game of the season (bowl game). For example, does anyone think that Eddie George deserved the Heisman over Tommie Frazier anymore? What about Bush over Vince Young? Exactly, it often doesnt actually tell who the best player in the country is.
2 national titles- In my opinion this is the most impressive part of his resume. That being said, he didnt start in the first championship, and he didnt play particularly well in the one last night. He also has the unfortunate distinction of being the only QB to ever win 2 national titles without going through a season undefeated. Still impressive though.
Physical Skills- Its clear that Tebow is a physical freak. That being said, does he have the best QUARTERBACK tools? No. About 70% of Tebows throws are completed under 10 yards. Yesterday, on passes he threw past 10 yards he was 2 for 7 with an interception. His running ability shouldnt be taken for granted. He is a bull. That being said, he isnt a Vince Young type player who takes over games with his feet. He also doesnt have the ability to create big plays with his feet. He hasnt had one touchdown run this year that went over 15 yardes. My gut tells me that if they shared the load at the goalline like most teams do, Tebows running statistics wouldnt be as impressive (because they are mostly predicated on TDs and not yardage). He also projects horribly in the NFL, but thats irrelevant because Im talking in terms of college.
Intangibles- Tim Tebow is a GREAT guy. Not a good guy, and great one. That being said, I find some of the things he does suspect. For example, his Ole Miss speech. It can be deduced from the speech that apparently he and his teammates werent playing their hardest before that game. A good leader shouldnt have to wait for a loss to get motivated. I also feel like he takes way to much credit for things he doesnt do. In the national title yesterday he played an average game. He threw 2 bad interceptions and most of their offense came from Percy Harvin. The defense won Florida that title, but Tebow gets the credit. Somehow he is even credited with the first title win, a game he didnt start and only played about 5 plays in.
Overall- Tebow is a great college player. Anyone can tell that. He isnt, on the other hand, one of the best of all time. His record as a starter is 22-5. Thats a worse winning percentage then Matt Leinart, Tommie Frazier, Vince Young, Charlie Ward and Ken Dorsey. Of that list, only Leinart and Young recieved the media hype and adoration that Tebow is recieving.
Im not talking in terms of the NFL. Hes not an NFL QB. Its not fair to rate him on that. Im talking strictly in terms of what he has done in college.
All of my details have to do with him abilities and achievments in college football. Im even specifically said that the his NFL projection means nothing for his legacy. I just feel his college achievments dont make him an all time great. Feel free to disagree, but dont bring up the NFL because I dont care.
I also want to repeat that unlike Frazier, Leinart, Young and Dorsey, Tebow has never had an undefeated season. I think that an important detail (especially since all 4 of those guys went through seasons where their teams lost 1 game and DIDNT get the title in that year). Id be interested in what you think about that.

As an athlete and football player? NO
As a quarterback? Absolutely

I'm with you there, I mean, he's very good, I don't think he's "great". Now, you seen what happened with Bush and Young, right? Bush is injured and Young is benched, Leinart was a bust. Tebow had the first 2 INT game of his career, that says something good about him though, doesn't it?
You seen exactly how the Heisman doesn't mean a thing, Bradford over McCoy and Tebow, that was such a load. I loved how he won, being a sophomore, when Tebow did it last year as a sophomore, not much hype on that.
Overall, I think Tebow will be a fair QB in the pros, he's got a lot of talent, it may take a little while to become a starter, but he'll get there, as long as he doesn't go to Detroit and get injured, he'll end up like Tim Couch with the Browns.

DUDE! Finally someone who thinks that Tommy Frazier should have won that! My dad, brother, and I have that conversation all the time!
As for Tebow, I'm sure he's a great kid, and I love the fact that he's a Christian, it's just everybody treats him like he's the "savior" of college football! There more players out there beside Tebow, but no one seems to notice that. That player from OU was right, in the Big 12, he would be nothing more than the 4th or 5th best QB in the conference.
His speech after the Ole Miss game was a great one, but once you've had to hear it like a million times thanks to ESPN, it gets old.

I think you're confusing your definition of great college player with the definition of great NFL draft prospect.
No one is going to tell you that Tebow is a better NFL QB prospect than Stafford or Bradford. The NFL game requires very exact skills and measurements that Tebow lacks. However, the same rules do not apply for college. In college, Reggie Bush can be one of the best players of all time, and then in the NFL he gets surpassed by Chris Johnson (of East Carolina University!?) in his rookie season!
Great college players have what it takes to be the absolute best in college, and may not have what it takes to do the same in the pros. Those players who become great in the pros may not have what it takes to be the best in college. That's why Eric Crouch and Troy Smith have hardware, but can barely stay on an NFL roster.
Tebow is absolutely one of the greatest college players of all time. Nearly two Heisman trophies, two National Championships, two Maxwell Awards (Nation's best quarterback), SEC athlete of the year (across all sports), AP MVP award...what on earth could he possibly do to improve his fireplace mantle?
He literally is one of the all-time legends, even if he never takes a snap in the NFL. So is he overrated? Absolutely not. I have not seen anyone in the media confusing his ability as a professional prospect versus his ability on a college level, so I'd say he's getting exactly as much credit as he deserves.

I think Tebow is overrated, but 2 national championships is an amazing feat (Even though the first was Chris Leak's and the second was the defenses.) His skills are very overrated. He is not a game changer like Young was. He has Harvin, Demps, Hernandez, and James. He has game changers. If you actually look at the tapes, he is a very mediocre passer. Most of his passes are within 10 yrds, which is Florida's strength, but he has a rather weak and inaccurate arm. If you stuck him on Texas instead of McCoy, Texas loses to Oklahoma, Tech, and Ohio State.

How can I determine if Tim Tebow is over rated if I don't where or how he is currently rated? Is he the greatest or even one of the 20 best quarterbacks in the history of college football? No. Is he the best offensive football player in the history of Florida football? Maybe.
Is he better than athlete in the states of Texas, California, Oklahoma, or Utah? Absolutely.
Is he better than the weak minded and limp armed Sam Bradford? Wihtout a doubt.

He has many intangibles and is a great college qb, however, is he going to be the next Petyon Manning, or Tom Brady? No in the NFL that jump pass he did against OU would probably have been an INT, and many of his runs would get nowhere near the amount of yards they get now.
Don't get me wrong he is a winner, however, he is not going to be a great Qb in the NFL, that being said as a hybrid FB/QB he can have a decent career

Maybe in the sense that he has played with some very talented teams that might make him look better than he truly is. However, you can't deny he did the best he could with what he had.

In College he is good but so is Pat White. As a QB he is horrible.
