Explain what's going on in these maths problems.?

|-3| + |4| = 7

|-5| > |4|

What exactly are the vertical lines denoting? I can't recall having come across them in my school days.

    absolute value(or modulus) means just the value of the number counts regardless of the sign

    eg |-5|=5

    The bars around the number mean the absolute value of. Which means discarding the negative sign. |-3| = 3.

    So. |-3| + |4| = 3 + 4 = 7

    |-5| = 5, so 5 > 4, that is 5 is greater than 4.

    Some times you will see that as 5 gt 4.

    Those are called absolute value lines. You solve what is in the lines like normal, but then you find how far away it is from zero. For example, in |-3| it would just = 3 since -3 is 3 away from zero. Basically, there are no negatives.

    |-3| + |4| = 7

    3 + 4 = 7

    I-aI = a (a is a positive number)

    so I-3I + I4I = 3+4 = 7

    I-5I = 5 and I4I = 4 so |-5| > |4|

    the lines mean "mod" or "abs", depending on your calculator. It means how far from 0 is it. -3 is 3 units from 0, and 4 is 4 units from 0.

    so mod-3 +mod 4 = 3 +4 = 7

    also, the size of -5 is 5, which is greater than the size of 4, which is 4.

    It's like putting a piece of string between them, and then measuring the length. It dosen't matter which side of 0 its from.

    So basically, you ignore - signs.

    The numerical value of a real number without regard to its sign. For example, the absolute value of −4 (written |-4|) is 4. Also called numerical value.

    The lines stand for absolute value. So the value of |-3| is 3, etc.

    -5 would just equal 5 -3 would just equal 3 same goes for anything with absolute value

    the lines are absolute value signs, wen you see then wtvr the numb. is in there. make it into the opposite but only if it is neg.

    if positive the leave it the same

    so l-5l=5

    l-3858l=3858

    l5l=5

    l4949l=4949

    it turns negatives to positive and positives remain the same
