    Engine's fried.

    Minimum of around $3000.

Max of around $6000...maybe a bit more.

Which is why you never let friends drive your car. Period.

Dude, you friend did not "Accidentally" do it. He raced your car because no one was looking. Happens a lot with "friends". He just came up with an excuse to explain the bust-out.

Accidental downshifting or revving through the red rpm zone never causes engine damage unless it's done for a *long* time like 3-4 minutes. Heat builds up at very high rpms quickly and the thermostat is not given enough time to open. If you rev it for a just few seconds nothing will happen - some people rev it to max quite often for fun. Or if you had a modified engine with Nos and all that stuff this could happen. But not with a stock engine.

Try to look for a used engine on craigslist - auto parts section. They usually cost very less like 200-500. Then the mechanic's labor should be likewise.

Sorry but no one drives in first gear and NOT know it. The engine will race and redline like crazy. It's not something that is NOT noticable...

Anywho, have the car checked out first. If it's just the head that need's to be replaced, some machine shops will have a new one done for $400-$700 (depending on size). If you need a new motor, expect to spend no less thant $3000. Sounds like you are better off getting a new car...

It's too hard to say what it could cost. I'm guessing its a standard transmission and leaving it in first goin on the highway like that, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually blew your motor. It was probably "steaming" due to possibly cracking the block from the RPM's being through the roof or split the intake manifold letting the coolent leak onto the motor. My guess overall though from the little you said is that the motor is blown. Give us more inforamtion. When you turn the key, does it try to turn over? Does it do anything at all? Let us know exactly what it's doing.

It all depends, newer cars have protection systems to shut the engine down when something like this happens, get it towed into the shop and have a mechanic look at it. Might not cost that much after all.

I can't give you a exact but if he blew the transmission around 3000 if the engine blew 5000 but if it just over heated then 0 to 500 check your engines coolant levels make sure it didnt just run out of coolant

    $2000 is my guess.

It is quite possible that the head is warped...which can get you for $1000 itself.

Additionally, the cylinders may be damaged from the overly-hot piston-rings being heat-expanded to the point of locking up in the cylinders.

It might be cheaper to replace the car if it was cheap to begin with, or replace the engine if the rest of the car is still highly valuable.

All depends on what kind of car and if he damaged the block or not basically your engine is fried, you need to slap that dumba$$ in the head and get him to pay

There is no way to know what happened or how much it's going to cost until you get it checked out! These other people are just trying to freak you out! Get it to a shop have it looked at and see what they say.
