Website blocking software in place of work, discriminatory?

In my place of work we have software to block certain websites for different reasons, and at different times.

For example "entertainment" sites will largely be blocked throughout the day, and then accessible over the lunchtime break only. Others, such as sites with adult content, are blocked at all times. Which is quite fair enough.

However I've noticed a few sites that I have tried to access, say 'the category "Gay or Lesbian or Bisexual Interest" is filtered.'

And every time it happens I think... surely that is discriminatory, to block a website for that specific reason. And possibly even illegal?! Or is it up to the company?

What do you all think?

Update:

If it contains porn or other adult content then that is quite fair enough as I said, but then surely it should list that as the reason why it is blocked, not "LGBT interest.."

Update 2:

The ones I have noticed it on usually are totally PG sites, (or at least, I assume so - I can't view them!)

There is also a category "Religious interest" which again, surely is discriminatory?

Update 3:

Thankyou to the couple of people that have actually answered the question asked.

And thanks Lorenzo, still doesn't seem quite right though does it?

    Hey,

    Yeh it sucks eh!

My office's blocking software does the same but says 'sexuality' for any LGBT related sites and the same as yours for religious.

I have thoroughly checked out employees rights in the past and its well within employers rights to block what they want :-( If they pay the bill they can do what they like.

However I have found a few which have slipped through the net, such as yahoo questions for example :-)

Edit - I know what you mean. When i first saw the 'reasoning' for the LGBT sites being blocked, I did find it quite discriminating. But If I complained then I wouldnt have a leg to stand on because so many other sites are blocked too. Religion, cooking, shopping etc.

Do you get on with your boss? If you do then maybe talk it over or make an anonymous suggestion...?

I can see both sides of the arguement.

First, I partly agree with the first person who answered, sites aimed at gay and lesbian interests are often based around sexual interests, or there is a sexual element,

From your standpoint I can see that there are many websites aimed at heterosexuals which may not be restricted. The main example I can think of is dating websites which are based on interests soley restricted to heterosexual interests. If these are allowed and there are lesbian and gay sites with similar material then you have a point.

Of course this logic would then apply to other websites, and I beleive it would be discrimatory to restrict someones viewing of a website only due to sexual orientation. The only problem is when these websites contain offensive or sexual content.

I would find out exactly why certain websites are banned. Get which ones you want to look at and put your case to your employer, they may change their mind if you can convince them.

I would say though, that it is the employers discretion to allow any internet access so they may be able to do what they want with regards to the internet.

Oh, I'd definetly be pissed. Um, I don't think it matters because they pay for the internet. But, I can see why it would be discriminitory if it was a completely pg site and they blocked it.

If it's not inappropriate, I don't see why it would be blocked... Maybe talk to your bosses or something and find out why?

Edit: Well... They have blocked religion too so maybe they're trying to avoid conflicts in the workplace. Like, if someone saw you on a site they'd be like oh she's gay. Or if someone saw a religious junkie on a site, they'd be like I don't believe in God.

    But it's still stupid.

The company is paying for the internet access and as such are within their rights to allow or block any sites it deems necessary.

Well it is at the work place. A person can get carried away at work on those sites, not get any work done. I can understand that. Companies do have policies. I wouldn't want to go on them at work anyway. Someone might see me.

Not sure. But it is on company time, company computers so I guess they (the company) can make rules like that if they want. It is their property and time after all.

    No

You are there to work and getting paid.

I think you should get on with your work and stop using your employer's computer to access gay porn.
