Is it ethical for clients to look at their progress notes, documentation, etc?

When you document session notes (like what you talked about during therapy), reports, etc..is it considered ethical for the client to view these documents or is it not recommended?

Input from professionals is appreciated.

HIPAA regulations now require that mental health professionals make these documents and records available for clients who request them. An exception is made, however, if it would be therapeutically inappropriate for a client to review certain portions of his/her record. It is at that point where the therapist's professional and ethical judgment comes into play.

What is the sense of taking notes if you don't expect to refer to them for help. Unless you have a photographic memory. My advise is to keep up with your notes to see how you are progressing. Yes it is OK!
