Jim is in, what about Dewey?

Jim Rice is now a Hall of Famer to be. Dwight Evans was just as revered a player for the Sox who played in the same era. The two had similar HR and hit totals. Rice had a better career average and had a slightly shorter career. Evans contributed more during his postseason appearances. Offense, defense, the clutch situations and the intangibles, why Jimbo and not Dewey?

Start your answer with weather or not you saw these Sox greats play. I think it makes a difference. If you're going with pure statistical comparison, be convincing for me.

See ya in Cooperstown

Saw both play and personally I think Evans is more deserving of Cooperstown than Rice was. I'm a big fan of defense (imo Evans was a far superior fielder) and of players that have the ability/wherewith-all to take walks and get on base any way they can. OPS+ was virtually identical for their career, so the offensive stats are pretty much a wash. Rice hit for better average, but Evans had the better OBP because he walked 700+ more times. Also, you look at Rice and see a player that had a pretty steep downhill slide in the quality of his play at the end of his career (with the obvioius exception of the 1986 season) but with Evans he was pretty much the same player year in and year out for his entire career. Longevity and the ability to play well over a long period of time is something I look for in a Hall of Famer and Evans certainly fits that bill. Anyways, with Rice in the Hall I see no reason why Evans shouldn;t be there and while we're putting those 2 guys in Cooperstown lets give some love to Dale Murphy and get that man a bronze bust in upstate New York.

Frankly, guns in the outfield have been overlooked. I saw Dewey Evans hold the speedy Rod Carew on third base with a throw I still think is the best I ever saw live. Dave Parker is overlooked a lot, too. The combination of their fielding and throwing along with long tenures as hitters ought to get them at least a consideration. Alas, the writers, the dopey group who decides, are in love with Hollywood numbers and not baseball greatness. So it will never come to pass.

Yes, I am from Boston. I saw them both play. Dewey Evans had a great arm and great range. He also had a .272 avg unlike Rice's .298 avg. Red Sox Hall of Fame, yes. Cooperstown. Sorry. I cannot agree.

Very good question but some what moot.

Until we have some minimum HOF standards for each position, this debate will rage on forever.

Setting some sort of minimums couldn't be that difficult, or could it?
