You have great timing with this question - Golf Digest magazine just released their 2009 equipment ratings issue. You should think about picking up a copy, or you can take a look at their online version here: http://www.golfdigest.com/equipment/ratings
"Try before you buy" is great advice. You need to find something you are comfortable and confident swinging. Once you know what you're looking to buy, check discount online shops like Rock Bottom and others to find the best price.
Best of luck!

I'm also a huge proponent of the try before you buy mentality. You may like the look of a golf club in a magazine, but the results may be awful for you. Also, you're likely to miss a club that you hit great based on looks alone, if you don't pick up and hit several models.
Something else to consider too, is shape & size of the fairway wood you're considering. If you have a square driver, as I do, I found going back to my small traditonal shape 3 wood played tricks on my eyes and in my mind. Once I changed to a complimentary square shaped 3 wood, I began to hit the fairway woods much cleaner.
Best of luck in your search....

I highly recommend one of the new square shaped woods. Instead of placing the counterweight at the center of the back of the club, instead the weight is countered equally towards the sides. I've found that for me it results in a much straighter drive, which is probably the most important thing if you'll be using it as your primary tee box driver.
But the most important thing is to go swing clubs! Any ****'s Sporting Goods or golf store will let you take practice swings to find the right club for you.

I recently purchased a Callaway Fusion Big Bertha 4 wood and find that it is a much better club to play off the tee and fairway. Previously I used a Ping 3 wood and find that my new weapon gives me more length and accuracy.

the nike lucky13. the designer of this club brought out square headed driver . accuform golf 1992 to 1998. it went over very well. nike is much more advanced with Square heads. it is not close. the lucky is EASY to hit from fairway. their drivers are the most accurate on the market. the same with the lucky. other drivers may have 7 yards difference than nike. but 12 yards less trade off. if you live close to canada. american dollar worth 1.32. try golf town.com, or golf smith they have canadian outlet. golf town had the lucky 125 canadian. american dollars 98 shipping canada to states . no more than 20. best 118 you could spend. due to age use 14 degree sonar tec, used the 16 nike for two rounds. no distance loss. control ed draw. takes brain dead swing to miss with thes. on pension cannot afford new lucky. but am trying will use the 16. just have to use psychology on owner. defiantly go with the lucky. contact customer service. very very helpful. dumping driver able to add 5th wedge. cap down. after bad cancer.

Go with either Ping G10 3 wood or a Nike Sasquatch 2. I use the Nike and a friend of mine uses the G10. I smashed one 250 uphill with my Sasquatch 2. Just love it.

Agree should try before you buy, if you want length off tee and fairway look at low loft, like 13 degree..

i suggest a 13 degree 3 wood if you are to be using it off the tee and fway as well.
i have a cleveland hibore 3 wood and its great off the tee for long par 3's and off the fairway.
i suggest you try them out first and have them fitted.
