    1) did you reformat and re-install windows? this is the only way to

    properly wipe out the hardrive.

    2) did you have another operating system before like windows 98 and

then you installed windows xp, home?

    3) did you add rams or a new video card?

If we had more information we could help you more.

It could be a number of problems, what you should do in safe mode is go to start, run. and type in CMD...then type in chkdsk /r and say yes to run on reboot.

Safe mode disables a lot of MS services so it runs a little faster...If you are running XP and you wiped your drive you need to install all of the device drivers from the cd for drivers a utilities.

Chkdsk /r will fix any type of file system errors but can take some time.

In your situation, there isn't much you can do because in my view it sounds like if you do any task your computer will freeze up. The best solution is to do a self-destructive recovery process that will reset your entire hard drive to factory-settings or settings that just came out of the box. Besides that you really don't have much option.

You didn't properly wipe your hard drive and have two conflicting OS running against each other.
