Stocking suggestions for 40gal breeder?
I have a 40 gallon breeder tank that currently has 2 young angels, 2 young kribs, 2 young firemouths, a dojo loach, and a bristlenose pleco. They all get along fine and haven't had any chasing or nipping. I am looking to add a couple more fish but I just don't know what would be good to add. I probably need something that inhabits the upper half of the tank because the angels are about the only ones that hang out up top. I was also thinking about a couple corys to add to the clean up crew. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I have lots of caves formed with various rocks and I large piece of African root that the bristlenose is attached to most of the day.

That is almost a perfect tank.....well to me.
If you want big fish (3-4 inches) to inhabit the top look into golden wonder killies.
Never owned them but i always see them patroling the surface. Maybe look into it.
Hatchets will fly all over your room if you startle them and don't have canopy. But they never leave the surface.
If you want a small top water fish my favorites are wrestling half beaks.
Smallest member of the baracuda family I think but if you got like 10-15 of them (low bio load, small fish) they would be entertaining as like with cichlids there squablers and hence there name..wrestle each other.
They never leave the surface, mine love blood worms but eat flake and shrimp aswell. Super peaceful to other fish. I hand feed mine blood worms with a tooth pick and come running when they see me.
I went to the reptile section and got plants with suction cups and stuck them in to make surface plants. They need top cover to be happy and in 2 corners for retreat.
And every picture I have ever found of them is quite ugly.
But there not at all.

That is a perfect tank for cories.......take your pick of the litter just get at least 5 of them.
I like green and orange laser cory cats but julii cats are sweet aswell.
good luck.. regardless of cory cat they need to be feed shrimp pellets and complete sinking food tabs...none can survive scavenging well.
good luck!!!

instead of Corey's get another bristlenose pleco and some white cloud mountain minows will inhabit the top of the tank
the bristlenose pleco will need some bog wood too

white cloud minnows would be eaten by the firemouths when they get bigger.Considering their size when they get full grown I would only add maybe one more fish. Like a redtail shark.
