Why do the majority of Americans define their own theology?

If Jesus is the only way to salvation, then I think I'll take the detour.

It's how people allow themselves to excuse their own poor behavior. If you can find a way to justify doing wrong into a way that makes it ok, then that is the route people like to take.

And this contradicts the already contrary stats on American religions, did I mention that statically, most stats are wrong, statically speaking of course.

I'm an American Deist/Pantheist. We have freedom of Religion. Please read the first amendment. The USA is not a Christian nation. It is a secular nation.

Nothing new, most of the Fathers mention it :
