Do you Vegans go overboard ? Where do you stop?
Example.. "Watch for foods that contain carmine it comes from insects" I'm taking it further and asking "Don't eat yogurt as it has live bacteria in it.
Nice input Ethelred. After reading some other things on here tonight war/economy/vaccines... to be worried about eating bugs in food, it kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I hope that all we can worry about is if there are insects in our food chain for the next 1,000 years.

A vegan is opposed to eating anything that has been taken from an animal, how insignificant the size it doesn't matter.
I do know what you are talking about. I am not vegan but my girlfriend is and I have been there in the aisle of the grocery store putting back things simply because of a single ingredient. That's fine though, I wouldn't buy a candy bar for someone and and say "Hey, man I know you are allergic to peanuts but there is only a little in here, and they say that it's only used for freshness anyways." I respect the fact that my girlfriend is vegan though, if she doesn't want to eat animal products that's great, I'll support her with that and if it includes not buying carmine then so be it.
And yogurt is fermented milk it comes from a cow, that is why vegans don't eat it...not the bacteria.

you are not taking it further to don't eat yogurt b/c of live active culture..
yogurt is dairy so we wouldn't be eating it anyway.
we stop at living things that feel pain.
plants are living, but its proven they don't feel pain.
same as bacteria - live active cultures - they are simple prokaryotic cells.
we choose to worry about eating bugs, its gross and bugs still feel pain. if you don't want to, thats fine but just because we choose not to eat insect ingredients doesn't mean we don't worry about war, economy, or vaccines?
plus carmine is just a food coloring. its not like its a major food product. certain companies use it but only about 5% of foods, IF THAT contain carmine

It's a matter of degrees. As someone who has been vegan for over two decades, I can say I'm not that fanatical.
I choose not to support industries that torture cows and chickens, and I don't consume or purchase anything that comes from a dead animal, but honestly, I'm just not that concerned about the bugs.

Relax. Personally, I don't get bunged up about insects. I would rarely consume anything with carmine, because I don't eat processed foods, but I, and many other vegans do consume (GASP!) honey.
Limiting animal suffering is one thing. Intentionally labeling yourself as a nutjob is another.
