Were getting a dog thats 2 years old? Changing its name?
Can a dog adapt to a new name or is it too late. The dogs name is Mudd( YIKES) and we dont care for that. We really want to name him Fender.

Of course you can change the dogs name. To help him learn it quicker get some yummy treats, say Fender and give him a treat and praise. Do this a few times a day for a week or so after that just repeat the exercise now and then to keep reinforicing it.
Pretty soon everytime the dog hears his name Fender he'll come running.

Fender is an awesome name, whether it refers to the late great Freddy Fender or the concept of Muddy Fender. Dogs adapt well to any positive changes, like a new family or a new name. It's negative changes they have trouble with.

I think you could at least try... Choose a name that is short and "happy" and use some rewards and treats to get the dog to associate the name with good things. He may not really know it's his name (I think most dogs really don't) but at least he'll look at you when you use that word. You can work with him by saying the name and giving a treat beginning when you're sitting facing each other, then working from a couple of feet from each other, than from across the room, etc. Proceed slowly and take at least 1 month to build up to calling him from a room where he can't see you. If he lifts his head and looks at you, it's good progress. If he comes when you use the name, you hit the jackpot! Good luck and thanks for rescuing!

yes you can change the dogs name they learn real fast when you change it repeat his name several times like when you are walking around the house etc just keep saying Fender,Fender to see how he does. after several days he should start to cock his head when you say Fender. it may take a few days but he will except his new name. I have a 10 year Chihuahua that I had to change her name because I have another Chihuahua that his name was the same as hers and I didn't want to confuse them so I changed her name and it took her a week to really come to her new name but I did keep saying her new name several times a day just to let her hear it.now she doesn't even look at me when I call my other Chihuahua by the name she had.

Bit late really unless you choose another name that sounds like Mudd. Hum. Actually it's better to choose a word with two syllables so Fender would fit, but that's a kind of odd name too imvho. I've changed the name of a 7 month pup, from Elsa to Hannah, but she was a kennel dog and I don't think was necessarily answering to Elsa!

It might be a good idea. Some dogs might associate bad memories with their name. If it's a rescue animal and the previous owner was mean to it or only called the name in an angry fashion.
Changing the name will take a few weeks to a month or two for him to fully recognize the name. Good luck with your new dog ^__^

I adopted a GSD named Sheba at the age of 6 years and changed her name so Sage, she responded to the new name with out any trouble. I recently rescued a 2 year old Gsd named Gus and changed his name to Donatello and he has begun to answer to his new name it took about 3 weeks but he did. The old names were associated with bad situations in both cases ( worse for Donatello) and I didn't want them to associate their new home with their old ones. It may take a little time but it will be fine. Change it.

Our family dog of five years, Sebastion has three diffrent names he responds to that were all introduced to him at diffrent times. For the first two years of his life he came to sebastion, then my mothers boyfriend began calling him seb. Then when he was four he adopted the nickname moose. You can now use any of the three interchangably and he will respond. Our new puppy also went through a transition of names over a months time and happily comes to his set name now despite the confusion.

Too late! By two years, he knows his name and won't respond to anything else. You could name him something that sounds like Mud though. :) Personally, I think it's kind of a cute name!
