I think it is best to have your own picture as an avatar. If you have something to hide you will pick some silly cartoon image as your avatar.
It is very possible that they are ashamed of their own image. Considering some of the things that are said here in R&S, I can see why some want to hide their identities.
I also think "Julia does not like you" gives advise that most of us simply ignore.
I also believe that most of this is a case of "monkey see, monkey do".

Oh get real then every one will look at you and wonder if that is how you really look
.
Or is it a look alike
.
So no matter who or what you use no one will really care
.
Some dude here uses an egg for their face
.
So what the heck make up your own
.
Go to it

I prefer real pic, so we get to see what people look like.
Some may look as good as The Rev. :)

Lets see a real pic. You don't need to make it to obvious to tell who you are.

i use a real pic because i'm an atheist posting on R&S. i don't want people to assume i'm a closeted atheist by using an avatar.
