Why is my dog addicted to water and peeing in the house?

It's been happening over a couple of months. He's 12, been to the vet - nothing wrong. He drinks water whenever he can and eats snow when outside. He wakes me up in the middle of the night - not to go outside to go potty but that he's out of water. Any help on this?

Update:

the vet tested for everything - including a urinary tract infection - all came out fine.

There are many health problems associated with increased thirst and I really doubt your vet has tested for all of them. Here's a link that lists the health concerns for polydipsia (excessive thirst).

Many dogs do benefit from switching to a higher quality food (most likely because of the higher quality protein source which is easier to digest and easier on the kidneys). Try switching to Chicken Soup for the Senior Dog. I have seen 2 dogs stop the compulsive drinking (and stools firmed up) almost immediately after switching to this food (neither was a senior - one was only 2 and one was 7). I would be concerned with kidney issues with a geriatric dog.

OK, if you just wanted to have a little fun, that's OK, too. Now, if you really believe that you have a ghost in your house or a devil, and the place where your dog pees often; here is your answer: If your floor is rising where the dog pees often, that is natural if your floor is wood. Dampness causes wood floors to swell and because each board of the floor is being pushed rather tightly on both side then it will rise. Next, you would not have seen the face of a devil, because there is no such evidence that such a face has ever been seen, and surely no paintings other than the comic painting done by religious orgs. Suggestion, clean up that spot and spray something on it so that your dog will pee elsewhere. Check to see if the dog's urine is very sticky, and if it is, then your dog is a diabetic and needs insulin. Other than this, your house is not haunted and is safe for you. Have a good life and next time ask a question of importance.

Excessive drinking is a sign of several things. Did your vet do blood work? Did he check his urine? My 14 year old Dachshund was doing this and it turned out to be Diabetes Insipidus. I would take a fresh urine sample and ask for a full blood profile. Your dog is at the age when this needs to be done.

Diabetes is likely if your vet hasn't checked for it. It can cause a dog to feel dehydrated, and pee a lot. It's weird, but my friend had diabetes and had the same symptoms before he found out. haha.

I would say diabetes as well. This is one of the same symptoms people get and most doctors test for this first.

Did the vet test for Diabetes? He has signs of it.
