The "golden lab".......?

Is this a Golden Retriever/Labrador Retriever mix, or just a terminology mistake, and it is a Yellow Labrador Retriever.

Just a little confused.

I see the term "golden lab" on here a LOT.

As far as I know Labs come in yellow, black and chocolate....not "golden"?

"very rare type which is the white lab" = BYB sales pitch BS

A Labrador comes in 3 recognized colours, yellow, chocolate and black. There may be shades of those colours, but they are still those three - not white, not silver, not golden.

There are an amazing number of people who get confused, however, by the different dog breeds, and don't realize that labs, goldens, flat-coated, etc. are all retrievers, and yet different breeds.

Its improperly used for both actually. Some people use the term to incorrectly refer to a yellow Lab. Others use it as a "designer" name for a Golden Retriever/Labrador Retriever mix

Like you said, Labs come in Black, Chocolate, and Yellow. The yellow dogs fur can vary from dark to light but it is still classified as yellow. A lot of people say golden lab and white lab but it is incorrect. Technically, a golden lab is a Labrador x Golden Retriever mix.

Hard to say in this day and age of crossing every breed with every other breed and coming up with ridiculous sounding names, like Labradoodle and PomChi, etc. But, I think the proper term is Golden Retriever and Yellow Lab, and they are two separate breeds. I've never heard a Yellow Lab called a Golden Lab - but again, who knows?

  • Most people mistakenly use the term "golden lab" to refer to a yellow Labrador Retriever. Sometimes is is mistakenly used to refer to a Golden Retriever as well.

I know....is it a Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever MIX? Or is it a Yellow Labrador Retriever? Or is it a Golden Labrador Retriever?

I usually assume that they are talking about a Yellow Labrador Retriever, but who knows? I can only assume that they did not research their breed before buying, so they in part should not own a dog...

I think most of the posters in here are incorrect. I have two gorgeous Fox Red Labs. Of course, there are only three colors of labradors, as recognized by the AKC. But the reason for that, is that the populous of red or the so-called silver labs, in the United States, are not large enough to be considered a general color. It is a genetic trait, the red color. But to say it is a bad thing, is foolish. Having the gorgeous red coat is no more a bad thing, than a baby having black hair and blue eyes. It's not common, but it certainly quite striking. And also, to clarify, health is not an issue for my reds. 3 Litters whelped, and not one puppy had any worms to speak of, the dam and sire are OFA certified, hips and eyes. No dysplasia found in the previous 6 generations of my grand champion dogs. Black and Chocolate labs have tendencies to be far more hyperactive, and less intelligent. Black, Yellow and Chocolate are the normal development for "American Labradors". However, Reds and silvers are not that uncommon for "English Labradors". Look it up. Educate yourselves about these amazing dogs, and then stop posting things as fact that are blatant examples of ignorance and misinformation.

The "golden lab" is not a real color of the dog, its an incorrect term for the Yellow Lab.

Labs have variations of 'yellow' just like goldens have variations of their 'golden' color, but it doesn't separate them as a different color.

From a cream all the way to 'fox red', its a yellow lab. The "white lab" is the light cream color. Its not rare, its a color as much as the black lab is black.

No such thing as a golden Lab, Labs come in three colours, yellow, black and chocolate.
