Is my CPU capable of a 64-bit OS?

In the System Properties, it displays this: "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3700+ 2.20GHz"

I'm not sure if the 64 in there refers to 64 bits or not.

Your processor is a 64 bit however that doesnt mean that a 64 bit OS will run good on your system. You need to look at your ram too. For 64 bit XP, you need at least a gig and for 64 bit Vista, you better have 2 gigs of ram or it will be slower than molasses in january.

There is no such thing as 64 bit ram

seeing those guys say no has me question my self... but i'm pretty sure the 64 means your mother board is 64 bit, so it should be able to handle the 64-bit OS... (i don't have a 64 bit and mine says "AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2500+ 1.82 GHz")

But i'm going to do a quick look on Google and see what i can find, i'll do an edit here in a few minutes...

Edit 2: i looked and i found something saying that that is the 64-bit version of that CPU, but i can't find the page again... and i found a blog where a guy said his CPU was "AMD Athlon(tm) Processor 3700+" so i would say that you have the 64-bit version, as for how well it would run the 64-bit OS, i'm not really sure... i've never tried it, but if i were in your position i would try it (but if something went wrong i think i could get it working again, and i don't know how good you are with that stuff...)

Edit: and seeing what blamay said, it reminds me that if you were to want to use a 64-bit OS you would want to have 64-bit Ram too, and if you could find out, 64-bit cache too, or the advantage of the 64-bit would go to waste...

i'm not sure if you know how it works but i'm feeling kinda smart so i'll give a quick explanation:

64-bit means it can process 64 bits at a time, but if your ram is 32 bit it is only able to process 32 bits. so even if your processor can handle 64, the ram can only give it 32... but now i'm going to go and see what Google says.

    no

Source(s): its not a dual procesor and if it didnt come with it the mother board proably dont suport it
