What is the meaning of the poem "Where The Sidewalk Ends"?

Here is the poem:

There is a place where the sidewalk ends

And before the street begins,

And there the grass grows soft and white,

And there the sun burns crimson bright,

And there the moon-bird rests from his flight

To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black

And the dark street winds and bends.

Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow

We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,

And watch where the chalk-white arrows go

To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,

And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,

For the children, they mark, and the children, they know

The place where the sidewalk ends.

Update:

What is the meaning of children in the poem?

Update 2:

Dear Roh,

If I wanted to find someone else's opinion I could have googled my question myself.

think of of a city it quite is crammed with smells industry and exhaust fumes. the place the darkish shadows of the tall homes so close they do no longer enable the easy heat you as you walk on the no longer elementary black floor. All you spot is roads painted with white arrows to point a direction for site visitors. yet once you walk some distance adequate you come back the the city limits, the place merely around the line you will see and smell the perpermint timber, the eco-friendly grass and color of the wild flowers, The birds flutter busily from tree to tree... you have escaped right into a international of light :) for a 2nd in time.

i think the poem gives an optimistic interpretation of life that offers people that are going through difficult personal challenges hope for the future by following the pathway to serenity. It could be suggested that the serenity of life is the eventual death of every living thing, which will restore it to a peaceful state?
