Is the rather unpleasant smell near certain bodies of water in Florida from the mangrove trees?

A while back a friend of mine was in Florida and noticed a certain smell near bodies of water. He was told that the smell was from mangrove trees. I asked someone else from Florida about this and he said that the smell was actually from bacteria in the swamps and other waterways. Does anyone out there know which it is or if it is something else?

It is generally near swamps, and yes, it is bacteria and other decaying matter in the water. You will generally not smell such unpleasant orders on the state's beaches, only on some of the coastal marshes, estuaries, and swamps. And trust me, you don't really want to be in the water in those places!

In shallow areas there is often decay (which can be from bacteria) that causes an odor.
