Divide: (4x^3 - 17x^2 + 7x +10) / (4x - 5)?

This is apart of a review sheet from last semeter. I forget the process of how to answer this and want to learn the process. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

The answer is x^2 - 3x - 2

not sure how to get to it though.

Update:

Thanks for the quick reply Jake, I don't follow though?

Update 2:

Purple, I'm following you up until you say "Do the Same"

Update 3:

Ha! Excellent - thanks Smarter Guy. I had to read through your explination a couple times (nothing wrong with it at all, I'm just a little rusty after not taking math for 2 years) (and your example.jpg was more than helpful!) You'll get my five star best answer when it lets me choose.

- Thanks to everyone that answered. You all were very helpful.

    I put effort into this... I drew it out on paint and all the little exponents and the steps and work, on the computer and I uploaded it so you could see.

    Okay. First you multiple 4x -5 by x^2 so that it can match up with the first number, 4x^3. You want to try to match up the first number (in this case 4x) with the first number underneath the division sign. So you would make it try to equal the number, which is 4x^3, so you multiple 4x-5 by x^2. You have to do the same for the -5, which becomes -5x^2. Then it becomes -12x^2, so now you have to match up 4x -5 with 12x^2. You multiple the 4x by -3x, so it becomes -12x^2. Thus, they cancel out and you're left with a +15x, which will be subtracted from the 7x that is pulled down. This becomes -8x + 10, and you can match this up simply by multiplying 4x - 5 by 2. Voila! You're lucky, since there is no remainder, which makes this super easy! Good luck!

    long division!

    Always use the first number (4x) to led off. So what must you multiply 4x by to get 4x^3? ~x^2~ Mult. 4x-5 by x^2 and then Sub. from 4x^3 - 17x^2 + 7x +10.

    (4x - 5)(x^2)=4x^3-5x^2

    4x^3 - 17x^2 + 7x +10

    -4x^3 +5x^2

    =-12x^2+7x+10

    Do the same.....

    (4x - 5)(-3x)=-12x^2+15x

    12x^2+7x+10

    +12x^2-15x

    =-8x+10

    (4x- 5)(-2)=-8x+10

    -8x+10

    +8x-10

    =0

    Combine multiples and you get x^2-3x-2!

    I know the proper way to do this, but i would be way to hard to explain it here.

    An easy way to get the first and last part of your answer though is...

    Divide the 1st Part of the 1st by the 1st Part of the 2nd Part

    (4x^3) / 4x = x^2

    Then Divide the 10 / -5 to get -2

    So basically you can get the x^2 and -2 Part easier this way

    x² - 3x - 2

    (4x - 5)/(4x³ - 17x² + 7x + 10)

    ////////////(4x³ - 5x²)

    ///////////////////-12x² + 7x

    ///////////////////-12x² + 15x

    //////////////////////////////-8x + 10

    //////////////////////////////-8x + 10

    ////////////////////////////////////0

    Use long division. Divide similarly to numbers.
