What is your favorite Steven King book and why?
I love his older works. Some of his more recent books start out pretty well but have disappointing endings. Anybody else feel that way?

The Stand - Stephen King is a master storyteller and this novel is King at his very best. The idea of the apocalypse, the antichrist (evil), a disease "super flu" that wipes out 99% of the population and the good who try to rise above it was masterfully written. It's a long book, but each character is one that is fully developed and you get to know and understand well, you can almost feel what they're going through as you follow their journey in the fight towards evil or against it. You love them or hate them. Through all the ordeals, fear, violence there is a spiritualism in the book that keeps your own spirit up as you read it. You are gripped in the possibility of a "super flu" taking over and wiping out the population minus a few and wonder would I be immune? The climax (ending) is flawless, the anticipation leading you up to it is well rewarded, the characters have all been led to to this point and you care for them. The ending is perfect.
I'm a reader of King, there isn't another of his books that comes close to The Stand for me. I agree with you on his newer books, he's rehashing some ideas, they just don't match up. The Stand is definitely the finest from King.

I actually really enjoyed "The Regulators." This was written in 1996 under King's pseudonym "Richard Bachman." This came out on the same day as "Desperation" - which features many of the same characters and plot characteristics as TR. I've read both, however, I liked "The Regulators" more, primarily becuase it scared the crap out of me and I'd never experienced that when reading before.
Granted, this was about 10 years ago which would have made me about 16 and much more easily frightened than I would be now. Ha.

I am a huge SK fan, and there isn't any of his work that I don't love. But by far the most intriguing is the Dark Tower series. It's not like his regular stuff but is completely absorbing! My second favorite would have to be "The Talisman" co-written by Peter Straub. One note on the Dark Tower series: almost every book he's ever written has a place in the Dark Tower.

The Tommyknockers is my favorite Stephen King book.
I loved the suspense of digging in the woods and seeing what they would find and the effect it had on them.
Thinner is my favorite Richard Bachman book.
I just loved the ending (he gets what he deserved)!
I have ALL his books and have enjoyed every one of them, even his newer ones.

Misery...this was th most disturbing...being helpless and tortured makes me feel horrified
Pet Sematary...I love the concept of the book (won't say, don't want to give it away)
*I only have read his old work. His newer novels just don't sound as interesting to me, so I never have read them.

I agree. I have a hard time getting into any of his new stuff. My favorite by him is Bag of Bones. It gave me the creeps. I also liked The Shining. I haven't read The Stand yet, that's next on my list.

I know exactly what you mean. My favorites are actually the Shining, Carrie, and Pet Sematary...all three were excellent, very creepy. I think I even had trouble sleeping after reading Sematary.

Have to admit, my favourite is still his non fiction book on the process of writing itself.
I don't think they're getting worse - I think we're getting used to them.
Can you imagine what it would have been like if you had read one of his current books as your first King?
